Anyone who likes Winnie the Poo books will enjoy "Stupid River". It has good characters, plenty of humour and beautiful drawings, especially the pole-vaulting aardvark! A fun read and just the right length.

Climb

Stupid river! the aardvark shouted. He listened for a moment to see if anyone would reply but no-one did.

The aardvark had walked all night, searching for a termite hill with several hundred tasty termites inside. But when morning came and all the other aardvarks had gone to bed in their burrows, this aardvark still hadn’t found any termites. So he carried on walking, getting hungrier and hungrier, and more and more sorry for himself with each step.

aardvark

The aardvark’s tummy rumbled. I’m hot and tired and hungry, he moaned, and now there’s a river in my way. He picked up a stone and threw it into the water.
