Introduction
Welcome! You have taken the plunge to understand what it takes to create a safe workplace for your employees! If you are reading this, you are a business owner, human resources professional or safety ambassador who has been challenged with the task of creating a program that will guide your company toward a safe working environment. By taking the initial steps to create a foundational program, a safety culture can be cultivated!
As I am writing, I can’t help but reflect on my first experiences of implementing safety programs; I was working with two businesses simultaneously on a part-time basis developing their programs. The first was our family-owned and operated telecommunications business. At the time, we were a company of approximately 125 employees with three locations operating in the greater Toronto area. The second business was a five-star resort that focused on weddings, corporate events, spa and wellness getaways; they had two restaurants, a full spa, close to 100 guest rooms with housekeeping and maintenance staff, altogether approximately 120 staff members. At the time, I was making a career change from Massage Therapy to the industry of Occupational Health and Safety by attending night school classes at a local college. I was working with both businesses part-time and approached senior management to ask if they would like assistance in developing their programs. Now that I look back, I would have loved the opportunity to have someone walk me through the foundational steps of initiating these programs. We ran into a few little bumps along the way, such as employees accepting the changes we were proposing, the cost of implementing a program, etc. As you work through this book, I will touch on a few of these hot button issues and assist you along the way.
I thank you for taking the plunge and integrating safety into your business and becoming a member of the Safety Leadership Institute. Implementing a program can be associated with the symbolism of a butterfly; change and transformation, a powerful transformation or metamorphosis of your business, and your employee’s well being. Congratulations on your decision.
Sincerely in Safety and Health,
Denise Williams, CRSP
Chapter One - Self Assessment
If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up some place else…
Yogi Berra
This quote reminds me that we all need a little guidance to help us in our daily lives, especially when we have been tasked with a project where we may know nothing about the subject. A self-assessment is like a road map to help your company put words into action, by creating a list of items to complete assigned with a level of priority; based on the level of risk to your business. The list of items will be the blocks in the pyramid that create the foundation of your safety program that support your overall Health and Safety Policy that we will discuss in Chapter 2.
When I look back 14 years ago, when I was working in the hotel industry building the safety program, I remember vividly sitting at a desk in the basement of the hotel sitting staring at a blank screen on the computer with a cursor blinking at me, and saying to myself, Oh what have I got myself into…
I didn’t have a starting point, so internet search engines and I became best friends! Sound familiar? More often than not I meet people working in similar roles to you that have jumped online and searched for the closest thing they could find to a safety program, changed the name of the company, talked to their staff about it and called it a day. Ok, if you wanted to make the hairs on the back of a Safety Professional’s neck stand up, congratulations – you were successful! This is not the recommended method to build a safety program, it is time consuming, stressful and the fear of not knowing whether you are doing the right thing or not can be very overwhelming!
Stephen Covey’s Habit #2: of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Begin with the end in mind, envision what you want in the future so that you know concretely what to make a reality.
The same applies here; where do you want your safety program to go? The self-assessment is going to give you a snapshot of a foundation of a safety program. After considering the list of items and your team has implemented them, the sky is the limit to where you can go after this! If the idea of completing the self-assessment is absolutely terrifying you, it’s ok, after taking a deep breath, consider an outside resource that will bring an unbiased approach into your facility to assist you.
