Chapter One: Introduction
A Hero of Our Time
by Mikhail Lermontov was written in 1839. The novel was revised in 1841.
The novel has a compelling Byronic hero. It is a perfect example of the superfluous man novel. Pechorin is the Byronic hero of the novel. The book is also known for the beautiful descriptions of the Caucasus.
The novel has been translated into English by several translators. The most popular translations are done by Vladimir Nabokov and Dmitri Nabokov.
Although it is a complete novel, it is divided into five short stories or novella. There is a preface written by the author in the second edition of the novel.
The novel has three major narrators. The first narrator is an unnamed young officer in the Russian army. He happens to be travelling through the Caucasus Mountains.
During his journey he documents his travel detains to be published later.
At the opening of the novel, the young unnamed narrator meets Captain Maxim Maximych who happens to be quite older and has been staying in the Caucasus for a long time.
He has his interactions with the local Ossetian tribesmen, so he is able to show the narrator the life style of the Russian soldiers in that region.
The second narrator is Maxim Maximych. His narration is mostly based on the experiences of his travelling companion Grigory Alexandrovich Pechorin, the central character of the story, who becomes the ultimate Byronic hero.
Maxim Maximych happens to have spent some time with Pechorin in the Caucasus. The period of time spent with him is not specified.
Eventually, Maxim Maximych gives the diaries written by Pechorin to the anonymous narrator. It transpires that Pechorin had left those diaries when he was discharged from his post. Since then the Captain had been carrying those diaries with him.
Pechorin is the third narrator of the story, but he is not like the other two narrators. He does not happen to be an immediate character in the story.
He narrates with the help of his diaries which had already been published along with the unnamed narrator’s travel descriptions after Pechorin’s death.
Princess Mary is the longest novella in the book. In this novella, Pechorin flirts with the Princess Mary of the title.
During that period he happens to be having an
