❖ The race for perfection
In the 21st century, the search for beauty has become a basic need, so that men and women are desperate for the perfect Body
Many people exchange a pleasant family ride for hours at the gym, sweating like crazy to get the extremely desired fit body. Some will even use steroids and some pills to enhance muscle mass, if needed. This becomes a vicious circle. Of course people must keep in shape and healthy. But I often read on the newspaper about some young girl who died suddenly from complications of a liposuction, or about a young man who, being unhappy with the body he got from working out at a gym, injected some forbidden and shady steroid and died of cardiac arrest; they are both victims of their own ego. This sort of extreme behavior is common nowadays.
❖ Uncovering the skin
One thing that we cannot forget and which has quickly grown into a trend
nowadays is cosmethology and esthetics in general.
Summers are really hot around here. Many try to deal with the heat by spending a sunny day at the beach or in private pools. And all women really want is to be able to put on a bikini without having to worry about unseemly hair, be it pubic hair, armpit hair or leg hair. Showing hair like that while wearing a bikini would be as shameful as a huge pimple right at the point of your nose!
Shaving wasn’t really effective, as it hurt the skin and made it rough and dark. Besides, all the hair grew back too quickly. That’s why waxing became so indispensable to both female and male wellbeing. But not everyone waxed for the beach. Some were forced to wax because they’d develop allergies from shaving and to keep good hygiene habits, they had to surrender to the torments of waxing.
Not even the pain she had to face during waxing was enough to keep a woman from having smooth, hair-free skin. Some simply called it beauty pain.
Waxing consists in removing body hair by the roots using hot wax, cold wax or even laser, which appeared decades after wax earned its place as a part of the esthetic market, contrary to a shaving blade, that cuts only the shaft of the hair, irritating the skin and making it start to grow back in about a day.
After waxing, the skin looks healthier, providing a feeling of well being during and after a shower.
Believe it or not, waxing emerged in ancient times, in the Middle East.
Human beings are always in search for ways to improve their looks. History reveals that even in ancient times people from different societies and ethinc groups were always looking for a way to get rid of unwanted body hair. Cleopatra used bands of cloth bathed in hot wax, a rustic and painful method, to remove her body hair. Egyptians were the first people to develop a mixture based in bee honey, clay and sandalwood extract, which would later become the wax we use nowadays.
A couple of decades ago, it was really hard to find a place for a simple waxing; not like nowadays, when there are several salons or clinics that perform this job. Not only that, but women also had to deal with prejudice in our society. Most of the time, waxing was done by a professional working from her own home, with a wax she herself made from sugar and lime.
There were also some beauty salons that employed this method, but most places could not be said to offer proper hygiene to their patrons. Besides, they didn’t dispose of the wax they had just used on a client, they used it again on the next one. This procedure was not considered improper behaviour as even the melting skillets (the electric recipient where wax was melted) came with a little wire basket used to strain the hair.
Years later, some companies started making wax in bars and selling them in clinics, which the esthetician could melt in a pot or skillet, saving herself the trouble of making her own wax. For many years women would only wax their legs and disregard their genital area or their armpits. However, years later waxing extended to the armpits and in the last few deacdes the decision to wax other body parts becomes not only a esthetic decision, but also a matter of hygiene. Nowadays a woman will most often be criticized for walking around with upper-lip hair. I mean, moustaches are clearly a sign of masculinity, and what woman would like to look manly?
Hot wax can be used anywhere on the body. Cold wax should only be used in parts of the body where the hair is thinner. Laser treatment is an innovative method for waxing and consists of a machine that emits a light that hits the root of the hair, promising to eliminate it forever. Some people do believe that the hair will never grow back, but what is certain is that they will go away for a period of two to five years, which varies from person to person. The results are lasting and even if the hairs grow back, 20% will come back thinner and more spaced. In my personal opinion, this is a dream for most women, right after silicone implants, of course.
But laser treatment is very expensive nowadays, and for that reason it’s not as commonly used as waxing.
Waxing with hot was lasts less. Hair starts to grow back in four to six weeks after waxing, but during that period hair that was removed in other sessions will also be growing back. Two weeks after waxing thin hair starts growing again and only twenty to thirty days after the session is it time to wax again. Women who have higher levels of male hormones may have to wax two or three times a month. As the years go by, regularly waxing can show a great difference from regularly shaving: hair will grow weaker and more spread out, making removal easier.
Waxing is a procedure that causes a lot of pain. Women should avoid doing it before and after their periods, as the body becomes more sensitive and can’t stand as much pain.
