About this ebook

After a disaster of a marriage, Gwyn wonders if she'll ever find love. The kind of love she wants. All consuming, passionate love. Once she had that kind of love, but was left alone and brokenhearted. Now almost 20 years later the love that she lost is back in her life. She wonders if she's worthy of his love and attention. Many years have passed, she's had a child, and things don't hang the way they once did. Can she take the leap into a relationship with a man that she still fantasizes about? Will he still be attracted to her after so long, so many changes? Can she tame her self doubts and allow herself the happiness she deserves? She knows one thing, she may not be the same woman she was so long ago, but she's older and wiser and knows that she can't let this man slip through her fingers again.

I've loved reading romance novels most of my life. I love time travel stories, Scottish novels, or just good erotica. I've always wanted to write a book, it's been a dream of mine for longer than I can remember. I decided that it was time, I needed to just do it instead of wishing I could do it! I am a mother of one wonderful son and have a man in my life who makes me happier than I ever thought possible.

    PROLOGUE

You want a divorce, but why?

Seriously David, you can ask me that question with a straight face? How about, we haven’t had sex in over 3 years, we argue all the time, you fly off the handle about every little thing, and I have decided that I need a life for me, a life that is not wasted on someone who obviously doesn’t love me anymore. At this stage in our relationship, we are glorified roommates. Gwyn Michaels closed her eyes and counted to ten. It was this or scream out of frustration. David was never one to talk about feelings. Gwyn tried to talk to him in the past and it always ended up in an argument. The passion had left their marriage a long time ago and it was now time for Gwyn to follow it and leave.

But what about Henry, don’t you think our son will miss his father? I know that we aren’t that close, but I love him and don’t want to lose him, yelled David. Here in lies another of their problems. While yes, Henry loved his father, David wouldn’t be winning any Father of the Year awards any time soon. At first, it was all, he’s my boy, we’re gonna play baseball together, throw a football. That lasted about as long as it took David to say the words. Now, they might play video games together once a month, but that is the extent of their male bonding. Taking Henry away from David was one of the reasons it took her so long to make up her mind about leaving. In the end, Gwyn realized that it wouldn’t be too much of a change in Henry’s life since David was barely ever home. Gwyn would just have to rely on her brother in laws and uncles to help out with any testosterone issues.

For now, Henry and I are going to stay with my parents. I will be in contact regarding divorce proceedings and handle it from there. said Gwyn. Noticing that he mentioned missing Henry and not her, was just the push that Gwyn needed to let her know that, hell yes, she was making the right decision.

Wait, this is it? 15 years of marriage ending in a, we will be in contact, speech? said David.

I am sorry about this, said Gwyn, sorry that our marriage didn’t work out, but I just can’t be held back anymore. I am a mother first, but I won’t be a good mother to Henry if I don’t take care of myself and to do that, I need out of this relationship. Good bye David.

With that, Gwyn grabbed her purse and left the house that she had lived in with her husband and son for the past 15 years. It was a Waiting to Exhale moment. The moment when you realize that shit gets rough, but you did the right thing.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Four Months Later

Another epic Friday night for the history books! Gwyn said outloud to absolutely no one. With Henry at a sleepover, she was home alone, on a Friday night, just her and her cats; Sir Purrs A Lot and Daisy. It was usually this time of day; especially when Henry was at his father’s house, that Gwyn’s mind would wander and the fantasies of Nick would begin.

Gwyn and Nick dated for over three years while Gwyn was in her early 20’s. One day, Nick up and broke it off. Gwyn and Nick continued to have booty calls until both of them just quit calling each other. Four months later, Gwyn met David at a concert and they started dating exclusively. Things were going well and six months into their relationship, Nick called Gwyn.

I was hoping that we could meet for dinner said Nick. I really would like to see you and talk. I heard you were dating someone new, but I really think that we need to give us another try.

Nick, we were great together and I still have feelings for you, but I have changed. I have moved on with another man, said Gwyn. It wouldn’t be fair to David, if I met you for dinner. He is a great guy and we are really comfortable together.

Sounds fucking boring Gwyn. You need a man, not an old blanket.

I am sorry Nick, but no. David and I have already started talking marriage and I won’t mess this up.

But you don’t understand, I am not asking to just get back together, I, well, I haven’t bought a ring or anything, but I want to marry you, said Nick.

Are you kidding me? thought Gwyn. Where was this man six months ago? I would have married him and had beautiful dark haired Italian babies with him! I am really happy Nick and won’t jeopardize my relationship with David, so I have to say no and I hope that you have an amazing life. You are really a good man and deserve the best, strained Gwyn.

As she was hanging up, she heard Nick say, I had the best and fucked it up.

That had to be the hardest decision that Gwyn ever had to make. Nick was offering her something that she dreamed of for so long, but he was too late. She had moved on. Now 15 years later, Gwyn knew that she wouldn’t change her decision, because it might mean that Henry wouldn’t be in her life and that just wasn’t an option, but wow did she struggle with her decision some times.

Gwyn fanaticizes about Nick. Lying in bed next to David, while he was asleep, she would fanaticize that it was Nick instead of David lying next to her. Not just fantasies about how different her life might be, but sexual fantasies as well. It wasn’t always like this. Gwyn and David had an active sex life up until marriage year 10 and then it was downhill from there. Gwyn stuck it out for years, thinking that it would get better, but bringing up the subject with David always started a huge fight and it got to a point where Gwyn just quit asking and frankly quit caring.

Once the fantasies started, there was no stopping them. Some of them would hit her while she was working at her office. The following Friday morning was no exception. A word, just one word, would trigger a memory which would start a fantasy. Having sexual fantasies while at work about an ex boyfriend is no way to get the promotion that Gwyn was after and needed oh so desperately now that she was a single mother. In today’s case, the word was chair, seriously chair. The document that Gwyn was typing up was about the new Chair of a committee, but Gwyn’s mind wandered to a time about 17 years ago when she and Nick were visiting his family in Tampa, Florida.

While his parents were at work, she and Nick had quite an enjoyable experience on a Papa San chair. So enjoyable, just thinking about it sent a surge of dampness to her panties. Just when the fantasy was getting good, her phone rang.

This is Gwyn can I help you?

What’s up chica? said that voice on the other line. The voice belonged to Gwyn’s best friend, Samantha Lee. Gwyn and Samantha have been friends since their high school days. They were the best of friends and polar opposites in looks. While Gwyn is short, brunette, brown eyes, and could stand to lose anywhere from 25 to…(let’s just stick with 25 pounds), Samantha was 5’10", deep dark auburn hair, green eyes, and seriously needed to eat a cheeseburger and make it a double.

We are going out tonight and don’t give me the, I can’t make it bullshit. Dinner, then drinks with the girls, exclaimed Samantha, You have been holed up at your house or at the office and it’s time to have dinner, a cocktail or twelve, and to spend some quality girl time.

Oh Samantha, I am tired, it’s been a long day, I just wanna go home, put my feet up and watch some Food Network, I hear Pioneer Woman has a new episode out.

Is Henry home this weekend? asked Samantha.

Nope, he’s with his Dad this weekend.

That’s what I thought, I won’t take no for an answer. Tonight is my treat. I have arranged Phil to drive us tonight so we can let loose. I will be at your house at 8:00pm. We will go out to eat and then it’s on like Donkey Kong and Gwyn? Dress like you are going to meet your first love. No khaki capris, no t-shirts. Dress to impress. We gonna get you some tonight! Kisses, and then she was gone.

Why did I ever ask her that damn question in Marine Biology class? thought Gwyn, I wouldn’t be in this mess if I would have just kept my questions to myself!

7:30pm rolled around and Gwyn was almost ready. At 40 years old, things didn’t hang the way they did when she was 20. Getting ready to go out took a lot more time than it used to. Primer, concealer, foundation, powder, Gwyn had so many layers on her face, it was going to take a pick axe to clean it all off when she got home. Dressed in a black silk shirt with wide arms that hung off one shoulder, with a turquoise silk spaghetti strapped tank underneath, boot cut jeans, and strappy black heels adorned with turquoise beads, Gwyn was actually quite impressed with the result when she looked in the mirror. But as most women, when she looked in the mirror, her second thoughts were, I wish these jeans were a size 7 instead of a 14, I wish that I was 5’7 instead of 5’2, I wish the gray wasn’t popping through already when I just dyed it last weekend, I wish, I wish. It’s too late to change anything now, thought Gwyn as she went in search of a purse to match her outfit.

    *****

At 8:00pm sharp, Gwyn’s doorbell rang. She opened the door and there stood Samantha, all 5’10" inches of her gorgeous self. At that moment, Gwyn thought, how in the hell can I go out with her when she looks like that? No man in his right mind would go after me when Samantha is in the same state.

Gwyn you look gorgeous! I very much approve of your outfit, you look amazing! exclaimed Samantha.

Yes, I am token, thought Gwyn, I am her token short, chubby friend that will be described later on as having a great personality. Now I know why I don’t ever want to leave my house. Note to self, get ugly, larger friends, thought Gwyn.

So where are we going first? she asked.

We are going to head to Marcello’s for dinner and then we are going to Kona for drinks, said Samantha. After that, I am hoping that you are going home with a 6 foot tall ex professional football player, whom vibrators have been modeled after, and who gets off on short brunettes with big boobs.

Oh yeah, that is extremely likely. It happens daily right? said Gwyn while rolling her eyes. Guys like that have no reason to want anyone like me. You? Yes. Me? No.

You have no idea your worth Gwyn. Any man that doesn’t see that you are gorgeous, sexy, smart, funny, and talented isn’t worth your time.

I love you Samantha, why don’t we just forget about men and get married to each other?

If it wasn’t for your lack of dick Gwyn, I would marry you in a heartbeat; now let’s go get you laid!

Dinner at Marcello’s was amazing as always. They shared a huge plate of pasta alla vodka with spicy Italian sausage and then had mango gelato for dessert. It really was nice to get out, thought Gwyn, nice to eat dinner with someone who was old enough to drink. Not that Gwyn didn’t love dinner time with Henry, but adult conversation about something other than school or work was amazing. Phil, Samantha’s driver, was waiting outside of Marcello’s for them. The way men were gawking at Samantha as they left the restaurant, Gwyn wondered if they wouldn’t need a body guard instead of a driver. Oh to live in Samantha’s shoes for a day, shoe’s that cost more than Gwyn’s monthly mortgage payment. Not that Samantha’s life was perfect. Most people that met Samantha, were envious immediately. She was a top selling real estate agent, had a huge inheritance, a penthouse condo overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, she was tall, beautiful, and single. But Gwyn knew that Samantha would give it all up in a heartbeat to see her parents and big brother, Chris, just one more time.

Samantha’s family was killed in a plane crash on their way home from a spring break vacation in Cabo San Lucas, during Samantha’s senior year of high school. Samantha was supposed to be with them, but ended up getting strep throat and stayed home with their house keeper, Mary. Losing her parents was hard enough, but losing Chris is what ripped her heart out each and every time she thought of him. Chris, with his auburn hair, tall, muscular frame, had all the girls after him, but Samantha knew him as her best friend. Chris was a Junior at Florida State University. Football player, dean’s list, soup kitchen volunteer, Chris was the best and in one day, one moment, he was gone. Gwyn knew how much Samantha missed him, his smile, his hug, his overbearing protectiveness over her when he brought friends home from school. Gwyn knew that Samantha wanted tonight to be about her, but she also knew that Samantha needed this, this time with her friends, her new family.

    *****

Kona was a beach front club with indoor dancing and an outdoor tiki bar. It typically catered to a more mature crowd. It wasn’t a meat market type of dance club with strobe lights and foam parties; Kona was a more laid back, see if you can find your soul mate while drinking a cocktail, type of place. The bartenders weren’t 20, blond, and named Barbie which is always a plus. Gywn and Samantha walked in and started the search for Erin, Reagan, and Laurel.

There they are! shouted Samantha while pointing to a table outside in the tiki bar area. Gwyn was happy to see her girlfriends, even though they are all way too skinny for her taste. Erin was the first to jump up for hugs. Erin Smyth was a divorcee, single mother of 2 lovely children. She was also the Executive Assistant to the CEO of a large manufacturing company. Erin was always the first one to hug you when you walked in a room, always there to lend a smile.

How the hell are you Gwyn? said Reagan while pushing aside Erin. Reagan Collins was the tough one of the group. She was 32, never married, never even had a serious relationship that anyone knew about, and stunningly, breathtakingly gorgeous. She was a guy’s gal. One that looked like a super model and knew all there was to know about football.

It is so good to see you guys, said Gwyn while hugging Laurel. Laurel Hill was the Southern Belle of the group. She grew up on a farm in a small town outside of Birmingham, Alabama. Laurel was married to her high school sweetheart, Michael, who was in the military. As the youngest of the group, Laurel had yet to celebrate her 30th birthday. Despite their various ages, they were a tight knit group of ladies.

So what are we drinking to ladies? said Reagan as she raised her bottle of beer.

I think we should drink to Gwyn’s future lover. He will be something once we find him, exclaimed Samantha with a devious gleam in her eye.

Oh Gwyn, do you have a preferred man? Me, my standards are pretty low, breathing, a job, no criminal record, said Erin.

I told Gwyn that I would find her a 6ft tall man, whose package is so lovely that they use it as a model for dildos and has a thing for petite brunettes with big boobs, laughed Samantha.

Don’t forget ex professional football player, said Gwyn.

How can I forget? All right ladies, do we see any prospects? said Samantha. At that moment each woman began surveying the room. The prospects were bleak at best. The men in the room were either too young or too old. It seemed all of the 40 something men were probably at home sleeping with their wives, not out looking for one.

As much as I appreciate the thought ladies, how about we forget about finding me a man and just drink and have a good time while we can? We all know that Laurel is going to run home soon to get her freak on with Michael, said Gwyn with a laugh.

    CHAPTER TWO

Drink they did. 5 amaretto sours and 2 lemon drop shooters later, Gwyn was ready to go home, feeling no pain. Tonight was just what she needed. A night to forget about ex husbands, lost loves, bills, and promotions. Phil was waiting for them outside of Kona when they emerged at 1:30am. Strange that Laurel didn’t rush home earlier isn’t it? said Samantha.

I thought the same thing. Maybe she just needed a break too. What I need is a diet soda and a smoke. Think we can get Phil to stop at a gas station on the way home? Samantha knew when Gwyn said that she needed a smoke, she wanted an electric cigarette. Gwyn quit smoking about 5 years earlier, but still sometimes had a craving. Cocktails certainly didn’t help.

Not 5 minutes later, Phil pulled them into a gas station so lit up, Gwyn swore that it could be seen from the international space station. I will just be a minute said Gwyn. She went inside picked up diet soda, electric cigarette, and some gum; feeling much better now that she had her supplies, they were back on the road home.

With her head laid back on the seat, Gwyn started having a fantasy again. Instead of Samantha in the back of the car with her, Nick was there. She had her head lying on this shoulder with his arm wrapped around her. His hands were caressing her shoulder and arm, and then they were moving to her chest and massaging her breasts. With just the tips of his fingers, Nick was circling her nipples making them harden with his touch. Nick could make her nipples hard with just the promise of a touch. Gwyn let out a soft groan of pleasure.

Gwyn, said Nick breathlessly. Hmmmm, sighed Gwyn. Things were just starting to get good when, What the hell? yelled Gwyn when she woke with a jolt, What was that?

We were just rear ended by some dumb ass, said Samantha.

Ladies are you ok? asked Phil.

Yes, are you ok? asked Samantha.

Just a little shaken up. I have already called the police. By the look of the guy who hit us, he is going to need medical help. Please stay in the car while I go and see what’s going on, said Phil. As an ex-Marine, he was always one to help. He had been a driver/body guard for a long time to the Lee family. At 60 years old, he was more of just a driver and a family member to Samantha than a body guard, but he didn’t want to retire and she didn’t want to lose him.

Within minutes they could hear the sirens heading towards their car. Because Phil called 911, the Fire Department, an Ambulance, and the Police Department all showed up. After sitting in the car for what seemed like forever, Samantha decided to go outside and help Phil if she could. The second her car door opened, it seemed like time stood still for the emergency crew. They all turned to her and gawked. Oh for God sakes, haven’t they ever seen a beautiful woman before? Gwyn asked herself.
