    Sandra Ulbrich Almazan

    Sandra Ulbrich Almazan started reading at the age of three and only stops when absolutely required to. Although she hasn’t been writing quite that long, she did compose a very simple play in German during middle school. Her science fiction novella Move Over Ms. L. (an early version of Lyon’s Legacy) earned an Honorable Mention in the 2001 UPC Science Fiction Awards, and her short story “A Reptile at the Reunion” was published in the anthology Firestorm of Dragons. Other published works by Sandra include Twinned Universes, the sequel to Lyon's Legacy; Seasons' Beginnings, Book One of the fantasy Season Avatars series; and several science fiction and fantasy short stories. She is a founding member of Broad Universe, which promotes science fiction, fantasy, and horror written by women. Her undergraduate degree is in molecular biology/English, and she has a Master of Technical and Scientific Communication degree. Her day job is QA Representative for enzyme company; she’s also been a technical writer and a part-time copyeditor for a local newspaper. Some of her other accomplishments are losing on Jeopardy! and taking a stuffed orca to three continents. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband, Eugene; and son, Alex. In her rare moments of free time, she enjoys crocheting, listening to classic rock (particularly the Beatles), and watching improv comedy.

      Introduction

      WOMEN HAVE BEEN WRITING science fiction since the beginning of the genre; in fact, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is considered to be the first science fiction novel. Throughout the history of speculative fiction, women have written stories and contributed to the field, although sometimes the authors have used initials or pseudonyms to disguise their gender. Today, there are many women openly writing science fiction and fantasy, but even when they are recognized within the field, they may not always be visible outside it. For example, media articles may list best-selling male authors in the genre but fail to mention any female authors. This is a shame, as there are a great many women authors who deserve more recognition. As I said on my blog on January 26, 2015, Women create great aliens and worlds, come up with witty dialogue, rock their science and action scenes, and evoke emotion. Some women writers are more well-known than others, but they all deserve an audience.

      In April 2015, I did my own part to increase visibility of SF/fantasy female authors by featuring them during the annual A-Z Blogging Challenge. For six days a week, I featured a few authors categorized by the letter of the day. Halfway through the month, I came up with the idea of collecting my blog posts into book format. This would allow me to expand my list of authors, as well as provide more detail about some of them. The authors would also get more visibility by putting this discussion directly in the online bookstores. If you wish to read the original posts (which included pictures of the books in my personal collection), you can find them by searching for the SF Women A-Z tag on my blog. (See the back of this book for the link.) For the purpose of this book, all women are listed under their surname, so some authors are listed under a different letter than they were on my blog.

      In this book, I'll be introducing you to over eighty women SF/Fantasy authors. There are so many more I could list, but to keep the scope manageable I’ll focus mostly on books and authors I’ve read. I’m a voracious reader (I read over 200 books a year) and a longtime attendee of WisCon, a feminist SF/fantasy convention. I’m also a founding member of Broad Universe, an organization dedicated to promoting women writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
