About this ebook

A Bitesize 1-hour read. Soldiers - Season 1: Episode 6: Regret's Escape

Surrounded by the entire German 7th Army, Regret and his squad must find a way to escape the doomed fort, find Big Bertha and destroy it. Without getting killed.

It seems the mission is possible, except the ‘Without getting killed’ bit.

But Regret will not allow such an awesome weapon to be turned on his regiment as it retreats to the coast.

Once again, they go after the huge howitzer, and once again they go up against Hauptmann Heinrich Schiller.

And Schiller has time, but for Regret and his lads that’s something that is rapidly running out.

    Regret’s Escape

Regret froze and looked across the rubbish-strewn ditch that served as a moat, and across the dusty road to the field beyond, where the German infantry lines stretched as far as he could see in both directions.

Back, he ordered and started to back off towards the big doors.

An unseen French guard dropped the locking bars back into place and the sound echoed like a broken bell across the eerily silent courtyard. The men all turned very slowly and looked at the huge metal doors, as if staring at them would change what had happened.

    It didn’t.

Taffy strode up to the doors and banged on them with his fist, but all he managed was a pathetic thud.

We’re buggered! Chalky said and unslung his rifle.

The others followed suit. It was a futile act of resistance against an entire army, but they were going down fighting.

Regret grinned at Alan. Bet I get more of the buggers than you do.

Alan shook his head in disbelief. And how’re you gonna collect?

Regret walked towards the narrow, broken bridge leading to the road.

I think he’s going to bloody charge them! Chalky said.

Might as well, Alan said, following his brother. Never know, we might frighten them off.

Yeah, Chalky said, trudging after them, I can see the nearest two hundred quaking in their boots.

They reached the wooden bridge across the pretend moat and stopped. A noise like a distant roar grew louder and louder until it became the sound of thousands of voices shouting at full volume.

Regret stepped onto the bridge and looked across the front of the fort and stepped back in surprise. Thousands of French soldiers were streaming around the fort and heading straight for the German infantry.

Alan stepped up beside him. Thank god for the French!

I never thought I’d hear you say that, Regret said, and turned to the squad. Let’s get gone before the Germans finish off these idiots and come after us.

The French advance continued to roar as they spread out and ran full pelt across the field towards the enemy.

Regret threw a quick look as he ran across the bridge. The Germans were retreating. He stopped. That made no sense. Unless… It’s a trap!

What is? Where? Chalky shouted and looked around.

The Germans, Regret said, pointing at the field. They’re running away.

But that’s good, right? Chalky said.

Not when they outnumber the French five to one.

We have to do something, Alan said.

The squad turned as one and stared at
