About this ebook
The Sage of Arunachala preferred to teach in silence. But when he did use words, he used few and he used them with telling effect. What struck you most about what he said was the authority of knowing that backed each word uttered.
Though all of what Ramana said was rich with meaning, if one has to grasp the very core of his teaching, one needs to sieve and filter, doggedly staying focussed on the very fundamentals of what he taught. Even those who have read many books on Ramana Maharshi's teachings will find this book different: focussed on the ultimate happiness as one's very nature.
More importantly, this book bring across points about Ramana Maharshis sayings which have not been given adequate attention and significance. To give three instances:
The very thought of God is Divine Favour. It is by Gods grace that a thought of God arises in the mind.
There is absolutely no need to hurry about anything: everything must happen only at the precise time appointed by the Cosmic Law.
The ego of the sage is like the remnants of a burnt rope.
Pointers From Ramana Maharshi brings you the teachings of Advaita Master Adi Shankara as expounded by Ramana Maharshi, distilled to their very quintessential understanding, by an experienced writer like Ramesh Balsekar.
Ramesh S. Balsekar
Ramesh Balsekar, a teacher of pure Advaita, or non-duality, is an unearthly blend of the utterly human and utterly divine manifesting as a brilliant spiritual Master. His crystal-clear and profound teachings are backed by his complete understanding that “Nobody does anything” coupled with his life experience as a top executive of a major Indian bank, as a huband, father and grandfather – all lived knowing that it is all happening as God’s Will. For much of his full life Ramesh, whose Guru was Nisargadatta Maharaj, has been devoted to Ramana Maharshi, in whose spirit Ramesh welcomes seekers and asks “Who is seeking? Leave the seeking to Him who started the seeking.”

Pointers From Ramana Maharshi - Ramesh S. Balsekar
ATMA-SAKSHATKARA
What is Atma-Sakshatkara?
You are the Atma (Self) and also that Sakshat (Here and Now). Where is the place for Kara (accomplishment) in it? Are there two selves, the one to realize the other?
What lies at the root of this question is that one is unable to disidentify oneself with the gross body. One sees objects around, and one wants to see the SELF in a similar manner. This is the force of habit, the strength of the ego. The senses are mere instruments of perception and you are the seer. Remain as the seer, as you are in deep sleep, and the question cannot arise.
In other words, Atma-Sakshatkara is in effect only anatma-nirasana [Experience of the atma is in effect only the realisation of what is not atma.]
BHAKTI
Once ‘A’ asked: How can one be a worshipper while engaged in daily work?
Ramana Maharshi did not reply. Ten minutes later, a few girls came for Maharshi’s darshan, and began to sing and dance. Their song was to the effect We will churn the milk without losing thought of Krishna.
Ramana Maharshi turned around to the Swami, and said, There is the reply to your question.
This state is called Bhakti – Yoga – Karma.
Ramana Maharshi once said:
"Desire constitutes maya, and desirelessness is God."
Happiness asserts itself by distancing itself from pleasure.
God who has sent us into this world has His own plan which is certainly working itself out.
BONDAGE
"Coming here, some people do not ask about themselves. They want to know: does the sage get liberated while alive? Does he see the world? Is he affected by Karma? What is liberation after being disembodied? Is one liberated only after being disembodied or even while alive? Should the body of the sage resolve itself in light or disappear from view in any other manner? Can he be liberated through the body if left behind as a corpse?
"Such questions are endless. Why worry in so many ways? Does liberation consist in this information?
Therefore, I would say to others: leave liberation alone, and find out if there is bondage. First find out who you are.
CLAIRVOYANCE
Reality is only one and that is the SELF; all the rest are mere phenomena in It, of It and by It. The seer, the seeing and what is seen, all are the SELF. It makes no difference whether the seeing or hearing anyone is in close proximity or over an enormous distance; the organs of sight and hearing are needed in both cases, so also the mind. Why then should there be glamour about clairvoyance or clairaudience? Moreover whatever is acquired could also be lost in due course; no gift or achievement can be permanent.
I AM
is the whole truth.
Babu Rajendra Prasad said that he had come to Arunchala with permission from Mahatma Gandhi, and would Bhagwan send him any message?
Ramana Maharshi replied: "Adhyatma Shakti is working within him and leading him on. That is enough. What more is necessary?" [Let him remember that he is not the doer of any action.]
A foreign resident devotee asked Ramana Maharshi if he might go to Switzerland where a guru was inviting him. The answer was: Some force brought him here and the same is taking him to Europe. Let him always remember that the world is only a projection of the mind, and the mind is in the SELF. Wherever the body may move, the mind must be kept under control. [The thinking mind]. The body moves, but not the SELF. The world is within the SELF.
