It not only explains what comfort food really is but it gives the reader some really great recipe options that they can use to make their favorite comfort food or simply try out a new comfort food. The main aim that the author has with this text is to highlight the fact that though we live in a world where most people are being extremely health conscious, comfort foods still have a place in the home. Anna Gracey

Anna Gracey has had issues with her weight since she was a teenager and has literally tried every diet on the planet in a bid to find a solution to her problem. After many failures she started to look at smoothies as a solution. They were tasty and could provide all the nutrients and calories that you needed in one cup. There would be no burgers or fried chicken or anything else like that that would pack on the pounds. She then modified her diet to a healthier one and started to include healthy smoothies in the mix. Some were not as tasty but with some adjustments in the ingredients she got it just right. When she began to see the results of her efforts she decided to share some of the recipes with others so that they too could reap the benefits of her solution. She is aware that many will have a problem just having a smoothie for breakfast or lunch or even a snack but if it is all done step by step the excess weight will begin to disappear in no time. Pair it with some moderate exercise and the results will begin to show even more quickly.

Comfort food evokes a number of responses from a variety of people. As part of a balanced diet, I see no problem with enjoying homemade comfort foods; however, I cook them exclusively rather than purchasing processed versions of these foods. This little cookbook wasn't as great as I was hoping, but there are some good recipes in it. There are also some recipes that I will never look at again, as they are not "from scratch" and do not result in anything healthier than going to a store and buying the comfort food (of note, the entire slow cooker chapter). I did appreciate the gluten-free treats that are actually modified to be gluten-free (rather than simply listing recipes that are naturally free of gluten as was done earlier in that chapter). I received this book as part of the LibraryThing Member Giveaway program in exchange for my honest review.

As a Southerner, I am no stranger to comfort food. For me, it typically involves some fried foods as well as a nice soup or anything else of that nature. This book combined the typical comfort foods as well as recipes that correspond to paleo and gluten-free diets (for those who can't eat the stereotypical Southern comfort food). The recipes are straight-to-the-point, with an ingredient list and then directions. We are given a bit of background about what all comfort food entails and then the author divides the recipes into categories, such as slow cooker, paleo, gluten-free, and even desserts. Overall, I found this to be a great cookbook and the recipes look very easy to prepare while sounding scrumptious.

Chapter 1- What Is Comfort Food?

People consume comfort food to gain a sense of self-satisfaction, also referred to as nostalgia. The food itself is not necessarily healthy; however, it does provide the consumer with a welcomed respite against many stresses. Some people refer to comfort food as Southern cooking, but in all actuality, comfort food can be any type of food item. Food items that tend to fall in the category of being comfort foods are those that are high in fats, sugars and carbs all at the same time. Many times, the foods are deep fried.

When compared to other food items, comfort foods tend to be more satisfying; this is because they are full of fats and carbs. A comfort food will stick to the ribs of the person eating it, causing them to feel full and satisfied for an extended period of time. Because of the sense
