Developing a Passion

for God’s Word

But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength;

they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run

and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

—ISAIAH 40:31

Begin this lesson by reading the chapter in Life Management for Busy Women titled Developing a Passion for God’s Word. Note here any new truths or challenges that stand out to you.

I shared with you some of my first waking thoughts each morning when my alarm clock goes off. Now, share a few of yours.

Now read John 15:4-5. What truths does verse 4 teach us about managing our lives?

And what truths does verse 5 teach?

As you think about these two verses and their messages to us, what can you conclude regarding managing your spiritual life?

Like an Eagle

Look now at Isaiah 40:30-31. Note the condition of the youth and the young men in verse 30.

What happens by contrast to those who wait on the LORD (verse 31)?

Three Small Steps

1. Time—Do you AGREE or DISAGREE that time spent with the Lord in His Word is always time well spent (circle one)? Take a minute to reflect on the past few weeks. Have you spent time in God’s Word? About how often? About how much time per day? Per week? What changes must you make to spend time each day reading your Bible?

2. First time—Think back to a time when you spent the first minutes of your day reading your Bible. What difference did meeting with God first thing make in your day?

3. Early time—First things first! We know meeting with God each day is the most important thing a busy woman can do to manage her life. And early seems to be the key! How did these busy people accomplish meeting with God?

—Abraham (Genesis 19:27)

—David (Psalm 5:3)

—Jesus (Mark 1:35)

Your time—What time do you normally get up?

What time does your family normally get up?

For you to get up a little earlier to ensure time, first time, and early time with God, what time would you need to get up to have your time?

Would you be willing to get up at the time you just indicated for five days (Monday through Friday) so that you, too, regardless of your busy-ness, can soar with passion and purpose like an eagle through your packed, fast-track days?

I’m assuming your answer is yes. So I want you to check off those days you get up a little early in the coming week. Then take a minute to write out something about the time you spent in God’s Word. What did you discover? What ministered to you? How did your time prepare you for the day?

The Power of God’s Word

God’s Word is the heart of God—What do these scriptures teach us about God’s Word and His heart?

—2 Timothy 3:16

—Psalm 33:11

God’s Word is a good use of your time—What word is used in 2 Timothy 3:16 to describe this fact?

God’s Word teaches you—Look at the Bible’s description of silly women in 2 Timothy 3:6-7 (KJV). What was their dilemma?

Now read verse 16. How is the Word of God the solution?

God’s Word reproves you—What many active roles are attributed to the Word of God in Hebrews 4:12?

What active roles are attributed to the Word of God in 2 Timothy 3:16?

God’s Word corrects, mends, and instructs you—Can you share a truth from the Bible that recently corrected and instructed your behavior? (If you can’t think of an instance, look at Proverbs 15:1 and share how this verse could correct and instruct any woman!)

God’s Word equips you—According to 2 Timothy 3:17, what does the Word of God do for you?

Can you share a verse that never fails to build you up for the tasks God has given you? (If you can’t think of a verse, share how Philippians 4:13 encourages and and equips you…just for today.)

God’s Word guides you—Are there decisions you need to make? Does the unknown path ahead of you sometimes seem dark and mysterious? How can God’s Word help, according to Psalm 119:105?

God’s Word cheers you—What role did the Word of God play in Jeremiah’s hard, sad, and lonely life ( Jeremiah 15:16)?

In your times of sadness, learn to turn to God’s Word! Do you have a favorite verse or truth that brings you instant cheer? (If you can’t think of any, how does Hebrews 13:5 cheer you…just for today?)

Passion for anything—including God’s Word—is not developed in a moment, but in a sustained involvement for months or even years. Dear one, develop a passion for God’s Word that is sustained over the years…and then God’s Word will sustain you over the years.
