About this ebook

Into each one’s life some grief is felt. No one is free of the tortured heart crushing agony that accompanies the death of a loved one. It’s what we do with that tormented pain that determines who we are. Moving forward with life is so much more difficult than shutting down and existing in the darkened abyss.

Maggie sat in the booth at the back of the pub. She liked the dark corner where she was most likely to go unnoticed. Sitting in front of her on the table was a bowl of Aunt Colleen’s famous Irish stew. It remained untouched.

Damn it girl, you haven’t eaten a drop. How am I supposed to keep you from turning into a skeleton if you won’t eat? Maggie please child, eat just a little bit. You always loved my stew growing up. The nice attempt wasn’t working so she would try a little harder. Maggie Mae, I want you to eat that bowl of stew, right now! You have got to stop wasting the good food I make for you. I promised your mother I would get you to eat again and back to normal. It was killing her to watch you waste away to nothing. Maggie! Are you listening to me child?

Jesus Colleen, I am not a child! Stop treating me like one. I’m not hungry, give it a rest. I came here because I couldn’t stand to see the look on my mother’s face anymore. I didn’t realize you would be twice as difficult as she was. I need some air. Maggie headed for the front door. Her soft blue eyes, filled with tears and the dark shadows surrounding them, were getting deeper with every passing day.

    SIX MONTHS AGO

Damn it Maggie, what is your problem. We have talked about this before. I want to get a dog. I like dogs. I grew up with them. We should get a big dog. Rachel was on a rant once again.

Rachel, think about it. We live in a tiny apartment, that doesn’t allow dogs by the way. You’re always out, either at work or with your friends. I would be the one to care for the animal, feeding it and walking it. I don’t want a dog, especially a big one. Maggie was not going to give in this time. Rachel always got her way and she was sick of. This was just unreasonable. Rachel would go off on some tangent and it would last for a few weeks or a month and then Maggie was left to clean up the mess or pay the expenses.

I’m out of here. You don’t love me. You don’t want me to be happy. You never want to do what I want to do. It was the same retort every fight. Rachel knew this made Maggie feel guilty and give in. I’ll be back later, when you’re more reasonable. Rachel pulled on her jacket and headed out the door.

Maggie walked to the door after her. Rach don’t do this. Let’s talk about it. Please, not the motorcycle today. It’s raining and cold, it may sleet later. Please don’t be stupid Rachel.

The motorcycle roared to life and Rachel tore from the parking spot. Maggie stood there crying again. I need to get away from her. I can’t keep letting her rule our lives this way. Damn it Rachel, I love you.

Rachel never made it to wherever she was heading that day. The rain had turned slick from the cold and a fine sheet of ice formed on the road. She was speeding, racing actually, twisting through the cars on the boulevard. When the traffic light changed, she didn’t stand a chance. The bike started sliding and never even slowed as it came into the crossing traffic. The semi that went over the bike and Rachel probably never saw her before it felt the hit. It was a horrific scene that day and so many lives would be forever affected. The driver of the semi was not charged with any wrong doing since it wasn’t his fault but he felt such agony over the accident. He had a spotless record and couldn’t handle this, so ended his career. Rachel of course, lost her life. Maggie lost the most of all, first the woman she tried so hard to love, even when she was so angry with her. Second she lost her sense of self. She felt guilty about the accident even though she was not at fault. Maggie didn’t know if it was she that was unreasonable anymore. She lost her confidence and spiraled down the wormhole to darkness.

    PRESENT-DAY

A customer was coming in at the same time Maggie pushed by and out the door. Chellie stepped back and allowed the hurried woman by. Once the doorway was clear, Chellie came inside. Her stick straight blond hair was pulled back in a ponytail as usual. She made her way to the bar. Hey Colleen, how are you today? Chellie could see that Colleen was upset. What’s going on Honey? The surprise hidden in the carrier she had remained unseen.

I’m sorry Chellie. That was my niece Maggie. She’s having a difficult time right now and I’m having a hard time being patient. How are you today? I suppose you went for another visit with your newest acquisition?

Actually, I have her with me. I wanted to show her to you before I brought her home. And of course I wanted some stew. Chellie smiled brightly as she gently set the carrier down on the bar and opened the top. A small head peeked out of the top and yawned as she woke from her nap. Once fully awake she wanted out and to play. Chellie’s huge brown eyes were filled with love for the puppy.

Colleen reached over and rubbed the puppies face. Oh Chellie, she is beautiful. No wonder you fell in love with her instantly. Wow, those blue eyes are captivating.

Maja wiggled her little body out of the carrier and over to Colleen to say Hello. Her little pink tongue came out and kissed Colleen’s cheek. I think she may be hungry as well. Maybe she could have just a little bit of stew? I named her Maja by the way. I think she deserves a name of sweetness.

I don’t think I have ever seen a prettier dog Chellie. Maggie’s bowl of stew is sitting on the table over there. I don’t think she touched it if you want to give it to Maja. I’ll go and get you a hot bowl of it now. Would you like anything else?

Just a ginger ale would be great, thanks. While Chellie waited for her lunch, she set Maja on the floor and brought over the bowl of stew that remained untouched. Little Maja was hungry and ate quite a bit. Ok that’s enough of that. I don’t want you to be sick little one.

Colleen came through the swinging doors with a fresh bowl of stew and plate with bread. She set it on the bar for Chellie and turned to fill a glass with ice and ginger ale. Did she eat some? Do you want me to put some water in a bowl for her?

You’re so sweet, that would be great, thanks. Mmm this is really good. So do you want to tell me what’s going on with your niece? You need someone to talk to. You know you can talk to me. After all you’ve done for me; you know I’ll always be willing to help you out. She continued eating her lunch.

It’s a long story, but not one you’re unfamiliar with. Maggie lost her partner about six months ago and she just went into the dark abyss. We can’t get her out of it. Her mother tried for all this time but just couldn’t bring her back. I offered to take her in and try myself, but she is a tough one.

Her partner died Colleen, was she ill for long?

No, she wasn’t ill at all. It was a motorcycle accident that took her, and Maggie blames herself, but it wasn’t her fault. She was at home when it happened.

Wow, so it was fast and very unexpected. That makes it even worse, not having any inkling about the coming event.

Yes, I guess they had a fight and Rachel took off on the bike. That was the last time Maggie saw her alive.

Oh that must be killing her. You want me to talk to her Colleen. I’d be happy to try.

You’re welcome to try but I doubt you have any luck with her. Are you done with that now, I’ll take it away?

Thanks again Colleen, it was delicious. I’m going to take this little one across the street for a quick walk before we make the rest of the trek home. I’ll be right back. Chellie picked up Maja and headed for the door. Once outside she set the dog down and clipped the leash on. They made their way across the street to the small quiet park and Chellie pulled out one of the little baggies she always had with her to pick up any messes made by her four legged friends. She could see Maggie sitting on the bench over by the fountain so after Maja did her business they made their way over.

Maja was such a happy playful little gray ball of love. She bopped her way along smelling everything and trying to eat everything as well. As they walked by the bench, Maja stopped and sat right in front of Maggie. Maja looked at her with her beautiful blue eyes. Chellie was just watching the interaction. Maggie tried not to look at the puppy, but couldn’t help it, Maja was just so alluring. When Maggie didn’t pay enough attention to her, Maja let it be known. RUFF

What’s your problem? I’m not your mother. I won’t give you what you want. Maggie tried to ignore the dog again.

Maja, here. We have to finish our walk. Don’t bother the lady please. Chellie tugged on the lead. Maja started to walk toward Chellie and they made their way back across the park before crossing the street again and into the pub.

Told you she was a tough nut. I can’t believe she didn’t at least pet this beauty. Thanks for trying Chell.

No problem, I don’t give up so easy. She did speak to Maja for a second. They changed conversation.

Maggie came back into the pub then and made her way to the back booth from before. She sat with her back up against the wall and her feet up on the bench. Maja made her way over to the booth. She sat on the floor and then stood on hind legs nosing her face into Maggie’s hand. A smile came across Maggie’s face. She reached over and picked up the puppy setting her down on her lap. Maja crawled up her torso until her face was just below Maggie’s. Her tail was wagging and she wanted to play but this human didn’t seem cooperative. Maja scooted just a little more and then gave Maggie a kiss. Maggie giggled and had to open her eyes and give the puppy the attention she wanted. You are a persistent little devil.

I’m sorry, is she bothering you? I didn’t see her sneak over there. Chellie walked over to the booth while Colleen removed the money Chellie left and Maja’s water bowl from the bar. While Colleen was in the kitchen, Chellie took the opportunity to try and get through to Maggie. Her name is Maja. Mine is Chellie. It’s nice to meet you. May I have a seat here for a minute?

Sure go ahead. What did my aunt tell you while I was outside? The poor tragic life of Maggie Mae. They all treat me like I’m a child, her and my mother.

Well maybe that’s because you’re acting like one. No, I don’t know your story Maggie. I just see a pretty young woman sulking in the back booth of her aunt’s pub, hiding from the world. That’s the tragedy I see. Maja seems to have seen right through you though. Dogs are good that way. They don’t care about your past. They just want to give love and get love in return.

Maggie furrowed her brow. She wanted to be angry at Chellie for that remark but the extreme cuteness of Maja just wouldn’t allow her to be sassy and snide.

Chellie sat quietly for a few minutes then asked. Maggie, do you work here?

No, I’m just staying here for a while so Colleen can bring me back into a good place I guess. Whatever.

So are looking for a job?

    I don’t know, why?

Well I need someone to help me at the training facility and you seem to have caught the attention of Maja. I offer dog training classes and I would love to have someone to watch her and help out a bit when needed. Would you be interested?

Maggie sat there scratching Maja’s ears and trying to keep her fingers from being chewed on. She is cute. But I don’t think I can. Sorry Chellie.

Wow, I didn’t think it would be possible to say no to that face. I fell in love with her the second I saw her. Ok, well if you change your mind, here’s my card. Call or stop by and take a look at the place. It would give you somewhere to go and something to occupy your mind for a few hours a day. Chellie stood up to get going. Maja, come Sweetie, time to go home. I think you’ll like your new friend Gertie. She’ll teach you so many wonder things.

Maja jumped down and went over to Chellie. She picked her up and set her in the carrier to bring her out. It was nice meeting you today Maggie. Hope to see you again soon. She pushed into the kitchen for a quick second. Thank you Colleen, I’ll see you on my next trip out.

You’re very welcome Chellie. Take Care.

Then Chellie was gone as quickly as she arrived. Maggie was still sitting in the booth. She felt lonely. Maja had worked her way into Maggie’s heart after all. Maggie climbed the stairs to her room, depressed.

    2

Gertie, where are you. I brought you a surprise. Wait until you see this little bundle of joy. Chellie set Maja down and slumped back onto the couch. It had been a long day and definitely not an easy one for her. Colleen was her very best friend. She didn’t envy her dealing with Maggie. But if anyone could help that girl, it would be Colleen. Gertie made her way in from the kitchen to see what all the hubbub was about. Seeing Maja sniffing around her bed, Gertie knew it was time for lesson number one. Chellie paid no attention to the struggle for power going on in the corner. Her mind had wandered back in time.

    TEN YEARS AGO

Mmm, Chellie thought as she made her way toward the beautiful brunette. I am going to meet her today. As Chellie got closer to her target she noticed the change on this beauty’s facial expression.

Annie’s hand flew up to cover her face. Her eyes squeezed tightly closed and she turned her head away as though hiding from some gruesome scene.

Chellie had never had a woman react quite that way at her approach so she turned toward the direction that Annie was turning from. That’s when she saw it. A dog with a leash trailing behind was making its way across the street and the small boy she assumed was his boy stood on the other side calling to the dog. Chellie’s quick thinking saved that dog’s life and also a horrible memory for both the beautiful brunette and small boy. She dashed into the street and nabbed the leash and dog, continuing on to the other side of the street. The bus that everyone was sure would end the life of the dog slowed and made its way down the street.

Annie was waiting for the screeching breaks and cries of the little boy. She heard neither. Slowly she pulled her hand away and opened her eyes. Turning toward the street she watched as the bus passed by. Now she was looking for where dog and boy got off to. She smiled as she caught sight of them. The boy was calmer now and the pretty blond was squatting down talking to him and checking out the animal it seemed. He had a firm grip on the leash. The blond lady turned toward Annie now and smiled. Annie blushed and smiled back.

Chellie stood back up and patted the boy on the shoulder. Hold on to him tight. You have to be the boss so he doesn’t pull away. Tell your mom and dad that maybe a harness type lead will work better for you to keep him under control. Are you ok now Timmy?

Yes, thank you. He said still sniffling a bit.

You are very welcome. I have to go now. My friend is waiting for me. Chellie looked then jogged back across the street to where Annie was standing watching.

You saved the dog. I didn’t see it happen but I thought it was a goner.

Chellie smiled at her. I just grabbed the leash and brought him back to Timmy. No big deal. I have been trying to meet you for two weeks now. I see you, and then you’re gone. You are very quick. My name is Chellie. It’s nice to meet you. She extended her hand out.

My name is Annie. It’s nice to meet you as well. I wasn’t aware that I was being pursued. She put her hand out and shook Chellie’s. Why were you stalking me?

I wouldn’t call it stalking but I was keeping an eye out for you. Annie, you are a beautiful woman. I just wanted to meet you and maybe see if you would have coffee or lunch or dinner or anything with me? She gave her the shy smile.

Oh, I don’t know. How did you? Why did you think I would? I haven’t dated since I started taking classes here.

I didn’t know for sure, but I was hoping, and I felt it would be worth the risk of rejection, just to try. I’m sorry if I bothered you. I’ll stay away if you want, but I would really like to spend time with you if you’ll give me a chance. I haven’t dated since coming here either, just an occasional cup of coffee.

How about a cup now? I was headed to the library and there is a coffee cart on the way. Annie was smitten with how bold Chellie had been to approach her.

Chellie and Annie had been living together for two years when the headaches started. Annie was getting them most every day. They were both still in college and had barely enough money to squeak by with. There was no insurance and Annie refused to go to the doctor. Chellie was worried about her but could not convince her to go.

Finally, a year later, when Annie got a position with the English Department and was actually bringing home a paycheck she got insurance as soon as she was eligible. She made an appointment and that led to another one and another one trying to figure out her headaches.

When the doctor called her and asked her to come back in she knew it wasn’t good. Chellie, will you please come with me to this appointment? I’m really nervous about it. I think it’s going to be bad news. They have checked everything and so far nothing.

Of course I want to be there with you. I love you Annie with all my heart. I will never leave you. Chellie pulled Annie into her arms and held her close. I will be right beside you Babe for whatever you need.

The news wasn’t good that day and after three years they had still not made any progress for Annie. They tried every therapy or drug that came out. Due to the position of the tumor they could not remove it. Shrinking it was their only recourse but that didn’t work either. Annie was getting worse. She would not allow Chellie to stop her studies or her life. Annie worked when she could for a few hours a day. Eventually they had to get a home care nurse for when Chellie wasn’t home and Annie had to give up her position with the English Department.

The very strong and loving Annie Moore held on tight for another year fighting for every single day she could spend with Chellie McKay.

    Promise me.

    I can’t.

Yes you can. Annie smiled up at Chellie. All you have to do is start…I promise…

Tears flowed from Chellie’s eyes and dripped onto the blanket covering Annie. I promise…not to do anything that will end my life prematurely. Her chin dropped to her chest and her eyes shut.

You need to finish this for me please Baby.

Annie I can’t promise you this. It isn’t fair of you to ask.

She tried to giggle but ended up coughing. Honey life isn’t fair. I loved you for all my lifetime and I don’t want you to miss out on the joy of love for the rest of yours. Please Chellie, for me.

Swallowing her sobs Chellie continued. I promise, to not force love away from me, if it finds me again. Does that make you happy?

Extremely, thank you Baby. I know how difficult this is for you. Please keep your promises made today. I love you so much. It’s time for me to say good night now. Annie closed her eyes.

Chellie watched through tear clouded eyes as the last breath left her lover. Annie’s hand went limp in hers.

The nurse standing on the other side checked Annie. She’s gone now Chellie. She’s not in pain anymore. I’m sorry for your loss. The nurse stepped back to the side and made her notes.

Annie’s sister set her hand on Chellie’s shoulder. I’ll call the family now and the funeral home to come.

Chellie got up and went outside. She walked down the steps to the dock and sat looking over the river. She wanted nothing more than to jump into it and join Annie, but she couldn’t now. She had made the promises to Annie and she never broke a promise to her Annie. About midnight Chellie made her way back inside. She had heard the phone ring off and on throughout the evening and the vehicles coming and going but just couldn’t bring herself to deal with any of them. Annie’s sister was there to take care of all the details. Annie had asked Erin to do it since she knew how devastated Chellie would be. All the details had been settled months ago anyway. Chellie climbed the stairs and into the bed they shared for six years. For the last three months Annie had been staying in the living room on a hospital bed due to her frailty. She was too weak to climb the stairs and it would have made her care much more difficult for the home care nurse.

Annie had been ill and fighting cancer for four years. Neither of them ever gave up hope for a miracle. When they didn’t get one, Chellie went into the dark abyss.

She was just finishing her schooling and luckily got her Veterinary license. The animal medical center Chellie had been working at was sorry to see her leave but she couldn’t stay now; in that house, in that town, anymore. Annie was everywhere. She was loved by so many people. They all wanted to be there for Chellie but it was killing her to go home or to go out so Chellie decided to move away and find a new place where no one knew her and more importantly no one knew her grief.

Pulling into the small city of Holden on that rainy day in August, Chellie didn’t know if she would find what she was looking for there. She liked the little park in the center of town and the pub across the street looked friendly. The sign said there was a room to rent as well so she parked and made her way inside. It was mid-afternoon and the place was quiet.

Colleen was behind the bar washing some glasses from the lunch rush. Good afternoon, what can I get for you today? Colleen gave away a smile.

I saw on the sign you have a room to rent. Is that by the night, week, or month?

What do you need it to be Sweetie?

Not sure yet. Could I get a scotch and water please?

If that’s what you think you need then let me get you one. How about a bowl of stew to go with it? Everyone loves my Irish stew with a nice piece of bread and butter. You look like you could use a good meal. Colleen poured the drink and set it on a coaster in front of Chellie but didn’t release her grip on the glass. How about some stew?

No, this is good thanks. Do you know any real estate people in the area?

Colleen, my name is Colleen O’Rourke. It’s nice to meet you..? When she didn’t get an answer she continued. I think I have a card back here for Bea Andrews, she’s a realtor. While she was over by the
