    LESSON TWO

    Pattern Alteration

    Personal Measurement Chart

THIS is the second of a series of ten lessons on Sewing and Styling, the purpose of which is to present simple, fundamental rules for making clothes. These printed lessons have been prepared in response to the requests of hundreds of women who have attended our lectures and laboratory classes in Simplified Systems of Sewing and Styling, and who want a permanent record of these highly successful methods..

Here, at last, are simple, understandable instructions, complete and easy to follow, which will solve every problem of home dressmaking. This, the second lesson, deals with the important subject of pattern alteration and gives you all the secrets of adjusting the pattern to fit your own figure.

Once you have selected the style of garment you want to make and the fabric you wish to use and have assembled the necessary equipment, you’re all ready to start. The next step, then, is to choose your pattern, and, once it is chosen, to alter it to fit your individual measurements. Your skill in altering your pattern will determine the success of your sewing venture, for you know from compliments you have both given and received that a perfect-fitting garment is a becoming one.

Select your pattern from one of the standardized commercial patterns that are sold under the name of the manufacturer. You may feel perfectly confident that your selection will be fashion-right, for today’s patterns offer a wide variety of good styles in perfect accord with the latest modes. You should buy your pattern according to your bust measurement or as near to that as possible. (For full explanation see Lesson One.)

Only a small percentage of patterns fit perfectly without some alteration. If alterations are needed, they should be made in the pattern before the material is cut; otherwise a great amount of adjustment will be involved in the fitting of the garment. To eliminate the maximum problems in fitting the actual garment it is imperative to learn and practice pattern alteration.

The system of pattern alteration which will be explained in detail in this lesson is surprisingly simple for it is based on a few important measurements that are accurate and that are the basic fundamentals of fitting.
