Rabbits for Flesh and Fur
Two acres would not be sufficient on which to successfully operate a rabbit farm with a stock sufficient to bring in a reasonable living. There are, however, so many who cannot muster any enthusiasm for the growing of vegetables, fruits and flowers, but who are extremely keen on livestock, that it has been decided to include this chapter dealing with rabbits, despite the fact that 20 to 40 acres is the area which will be required to successfully and profitably run such a concern.
Quite a small area will suffice for housing the stock, but a large area will be required from which to produce the foodstuffs and bedding for the stock. Not growing foodstuffs and bedding, it would have to be purchased, a practice which is to be deprecated on at least two counts:
(a) Dependence upon a third party for essential supplies.
(b) Expense. This would be such as to swallow up the major portion of any possible profit.
It having been made quite clear that a comparatively large acreage will be required for the breeding of rabbits, and the reason for this need stated, the subject will be left for the moment, but will be dealt with at some length at a later stage.
