    CHAPTER I

    THE SWING BREAK

The Swing Break is part of a regular fox-trot routine. It is really nothing more than three breaks following each other, with slight variations for each break. Fox-trot music is played in 4-4 time; that is, there are four beats of music to each measure. The simpler forms of the fox-trot are explained later in the book under the section called. The New Fox-trot. If these steps are practiced so that a basis for dancing is firmly established, it will be surprisingly simple to follow and do any of the newer steps.

The best way to practice is on a hardwood floor so that there is no drag to the feet and that each of the steps may be done smoothly. Turn on your radio, or put a fox-trot record on your phonograph. If neither is available, just hum a fox-trot. Listen to the tempo, or timing of the music until you have definitely established the rhythm necessary to dance to this type of music. It is very easy. Do not be discouraged if you have some difficulty at first. Practice will make you proficient.

From this position, the man steps forward with his right foot — his partner with her left, so that both are stepping on the foot closest to each other. Count
