      PELTING

      The ultimate source of income from fur farming is primarily based on the quality of fur produced. Although successful fur animal raising is directly dependent on careful feeding, breeding, and handling methods, it is equally important to kill the animal and remove the pelt properly. Many successful beginners in fur farming follow the practice of killing some animals every year and marketing the pelts. These are naturally the culls, that is the animals that are inferior in quality and breeding ability or those that have served their usefulness, non-producers, and those that have been injured through accident.

      Primeness

      The period of primeness varies somewhat, depending on the individual, the climate, the season, and the method of feeding. As a general rule, however, skins are prime for about two months after the molt is completed, and during this time they have no dark spots on the flesh side. Pelts of foxes, fishers, martens, minks, otters, skunks, raccoons, and opossums are best from late in November until about the end of January. Muskrat and beaver pelts are prime in February and March.
