People of Damascus;
I remember your children playing in
my fields. I remember nursing their
childhood and keeping them safe from harm.
It was not long ago that you would
go to the markets and ask for bread
and call the baker by the name of
his first born child. I know you miss the tradition.
You would sit on the rooftops of your house
gazing at the same sky your ancestors
gazed so long ago. I kept you warm during
those summer nights; and let your laughter find its way to the stars.
The narrow streets that housed
young lovers; their jealous quarrels as well
as his call of return. How he would serenade her
with a defiance and a stubbornness that only
reminded her of her father. How she loved him, and how he loved her.
But now I have fallen, and I
have failed you in every way. I see
you leaving with tears in your
