About this ebook

Studies into genetics have made it possible to breed animals for specific purposes; using positive genetic traits to enhance future offspring. In order for this to work it is necessary for the animals to be constantly monitored and controlled; however, certain issues may arise if the species you are trying to farm is Homo sapiens.

Elsie-Grace Elliott, citizen #260775220476F, is a single female of average attributes and good health. She is thirty five when she is picked for the Selected Procreation Program. She is a good citizen, she holds down a good job, and takes care of her health; but above all she is entirely loyal to The State. That is, until The State writes her off.

With her belief system in tatters Elsie is left with a choice; to trust in the system.... or to fight it.

    Lambing - Heather Perrin

    Data Transmission 22.04.76 Transmission #1a

#260775220476F: Full term. Weight: 3.5kg. Length 51.3cm. Labor length: 12 hours; no complications. Female infant of average attributes. No abnormalities detected or suspected.

"She's okay, isn't she? Everything is normal?" Now over the intense pain Grace Elliott turned her complete attention to the goings on beside her; barely registering her husband Jacob's attempts to mop her brow.

Perfectly normal Mrs Elliott, answered the midwife. almost finished up here. We've got quite a wriggly one. The smiling midwife turned to meet the apprehensive gaze of Grace. A healthy baby girl.

Grace eagerly accepted her new baby into her arms; cuddling her close. Jacob smoothed and kissed their baby's head. No complications were predicted and none had arisen. The experience had gone as smoothly as it could have; for which Grace would be eternally thankful. She would be fortunate enough to leave with her baby in the next forty eight hours; after the midwife had deemed her fit. They had promised each other that they would not name their child until she was safely home; when she was definitely theirs. It was an empty promise. Within five seconds they were smitten, and within an hour Elsie-Grace was named.

Elsie carefully scraped her dark hair up into a ponytail before swirling it round and clipping it into a bun. She had worn her hair this way for the last six years; after deciding that it made her look more professional, and had the technique perfected. Errant strands would not be tolerated. She leaned in towards the mirror and scrutinised her skin; making a mental note of the feint line forming between her eyebrows and resolving to make a conscious effort not to frown or squint quite so often. She powdered her cream-coloured cheeks and meticulously applied brown eye-liner. She finished up by applying a rose gloss to her lips. She favoured a natural look: which she seldom deviated from. It was the first Tuesday of the month; the scheduled meeting day. As senior management she would be required to present her team's performance figures to the department directors. It had been a productive month; she was not worried. She adjusted her suit jacket, grey pinstripe, and smoothed down her pencil skirt. She walked downstairs where her dog Logan was sat patiently at the front door waiting for the postman. She checked her watch as she headed through to the kitchen; 8.15. The letterbox opened. Logan barked happily. On time as always.

Whole-wheat cereal for breakfast with a small glass of juice and a herbal tea. It was the same every day; apart from Sunday morning when she would treat herself to a modest helping of pancakes and bacon. She flipped through the morning's news articles on her tablet as she ate. Crime rates were down, and the feared outbreak of influenza had been nipped in the bud. Everything was under control. It was comforting.

Logan dropped the post at her feet with a friendly bark, he received a scratch behind the ear for his efforts before trotting off happily into their small garden. Elsie recognised her water bill and a bank statement through their envelopes, also a folded leaflet that announced the timetable of compulsory community meetings for the quarter. She would have to make a note on her calender- though her personal tablet would be updated automatically to correspond. The last letter, in a manilla envelope, was stamped with the blue state office logo: an open eye sat atop a DNA symbol. It was addressed to her; foremost by citizen number, followed by her full name. She hadn't received correspondence from the state office since her career placement over ten years ago. She opened it, feeling more curiosity than anxiety. The state office did not contact you about anything bad. They had no need to.

Inside the envelope was a typed letter folded neatly in three places. It was from S.P.P. Department. She scanned the contents of the letter as she calmly sipped her tea. She was being drafted.

Isn't there some sort of 'opt out' thing? Kirstin had been Elsie's closest friend since tertiary level education. She was currently looking at her over her coffee with a look of concern that Elsie found disconcerting.

No. Elsie said quickly, sipping gently at her soy latte. She swallowed; Not that it would be my place to question their decision.

Kirstin looked at her for a moment. Well it is an odd choice. Elsie raised an eyebrow. I mean, it's just you...

    And Logan. Elsie interrupted.

I don't think he counts. I just thought they were quite particular about... that.

Elsie shrugged; nonplussed, It's a relatively new initiative. Who knows what the requirements are. It's quite exciting actually.

Yes. Sorry. I mean, congratulations I suppose.

    Thanks.

There was a pregnant pause as the two women sipped at their drinks. Kirstin; who always had something to say, found herself at a loss and settled for asking: So, when?

I've my induction at South Central in two weeks. The appointment cleared this morning. Elsie nodded towards her tablet which was sat beside Kirstin's on the table. How's Chris? she asked, dismissing the subject.
