    Introduction

I am excited to share this collection of the most important questions my patients have asked me when dealing with acute and crippling back pain. It is a synthesis of thousands of memorable patients and their individual journeys through new and uncharted territories. Many have had fairytale endings yet others suffer for many years due to indecision. Over the past decade, I have found that the most important predictor for a great outcome is a mutually respectful patient-physician relationship with not only a motivated physician but a motivated patient. This book was written in a question answer format to make it easier for you to find the answers you need to get your life back from sudden back pain.

The book begins by describing several of the many causes of back pain and reasons why you may be suffering from back pain. Unfortunately, back pain is not only caused by improper lifting and extra pounds over your ideal weight, it can also be associated with urgent medical conditions such as stress, an aortic aneurysm, intestinal problems, cancer and other maladies. In many cases your treatment plan may include medications and physical therapy. Medications may be helpful for the acute pain only and it is important to understand the different types of medications and their potential risks and benefits. Physical therapy is important as well but it greatly depends on the individual therapist, otherwise you end up wasting your time. Remember, physical therapy and medications are not the only treatment options available so keep an open mind and seriously consider chiropractic, interventional procedures and surgery as well. Often there can be things that can make a tremendous difference right away, some of my patients have even described them as a cure but it is very dependent on identifying the root of the problem first.

Fortunately, for most people, research has shown that regardless of the type of treatment you eventually choose, it will not make much of a difference two years after from the original episode of pain. Your goal is to do just enough to treat the acute severe pain to allow
