It's probably useful, but, with all due respect, there is no space in some part of the text. After the first couple of pages, I gave it up.

Legal Phrases - Harry Jay

Introduction – The meaning of words is not in the words; they are in us!

Legalese or as I sometimes call it The Vowel Movement is a world of language unto itself.

As a writer and author of over 150 books, I know the importance of words and the power they contain.  Nowhere is this more important than in legal writing because a person’s life can be at risk, property, assets and much more can be dangling at the end of a line of words.

But words have different meanings to different people.  Oh, the dictionary definition is the same, but the way the word is perceived by the writer as well as the reader can be different.  In other words, The meaning of words is not in the words; they are in US!

As you well know, there are many ways to say the same thing.  Professor Eugene Volokh at my alma mater – UCLA has put together what he calls common clunkers and they are interesting…see below!

Eschew, Evade, and/or Eradicate Legalese

Prof. Eugene Volokh, UCLA Law School

Some common clunkers and their simpler, more readable replacements.   The replacements aren't always perfect synonyms, but 90% of the time they're better than the original.   Warning:   Some of these changes also require some grammatical twiddling of other parts of the sentence.
