    A wet thud.

Mike Eiser saw Charlie Bozeman’s head dissolve into a spray of blood and brains. A tenth of a second later, Eiser’s brain registered the sound of the shot; two-tenths of a second later, Eiser’s nose was flat on the bottom of the gully he was in belly crawling frantically for a culvert fifty feet in front of him.

Good news; no more shots, he had not been seen. Bad news; they would quickly come to check out Charlie’s body.

The culvert was just large enough for Eiser to sit up and turn around. Rattlesnakes, moccasins, copperheads all loved to hang out in culverts. He almost filled his shorts at the idea he might have deadly company. No snakes; just spiders. Big colorful spiders had spun webs over the entrance. A few black widows just inside retreated and let him in; come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly. He could sit with his back to one wall and watch both ways – just a darker lump to anyone looking in. A sunlight-filled orb to the left; a sunlight-filled orb to the right; Mike in the middle. The broken spider webs screamed out his location to anyone who cared to look. Right then, no one was looking.

Quietly, he drew a Glock 17 from a flapjack holster, then, a Glock 26 from an ankle
