About this ebook

In this eBook original, numerous practical as well as philosophical
issues are explored. In an in-depth, wide-ranging interview appearing in
book form for the first time, Stephen Arroyo answers questions about
his early years in astrology, how he came to write some of his classic
works, and his views on various central issues in astrology’s current
practice and potential future development. In another chapter, he
provides concise new observations and guidelines that provide more
insightful ways of understanding many factors in both individual birth
charts and chart comparisons.
In the other sections of this book, he discusses what astrology can
contribute to psychology, how to understand the Ascendant, and
possible explanations of transits’ powerful effects. And importantly,
this is the only book currently available that describes and explores his
unique theory of “subtones†as an incisive, psychologically revealing
method of achieving greater depth in understanding any birth chart. In
short, utilizing “subtones†is a method of synthesizing the major chart
factors in any person’s chart in a simple, quick way that people at any
level of astrological knowledge can easily learn and reliably use.

    About The Author

If the human psyche is anything, it must be of unimaginable complexity and diversity, so it cannot possibly be approached through a mere psychology of instinct. I can only gaze with wonder and awe at the depths and heights of our psychic nature… . Beside this picture I would like to place the spectacle of the starry heavens at night, for the only equivalent of the universe within is the universe without… .

INTRODUCTION & Some Updated Views on Neglected Astrological Subjects

Numerous practical as well as philosophical issues are explored in this eBook, including considerations and reflections related to astrology, psychology, and counseling. This eBook will keep available some work that I particularly value. I have revised & updated quite a bit in the Chart Synthesis and Key Issues chapters, which appeared in original form in a book that is now Out of Print. Much of these two chapters has also appeared in various German, Dutch, French, Italian, Czech, and Spanish editions. Methods of Chart Synthesis has also appeared as a separately published booklet in Hungarian.

In those sections of the book, I discuss what astrology can contribute to psychology, how to understand the Ascendant, and potential theoretical explanations of transits’ reliable and powerful effects. This is also the only book currently available wherein I describe my theory of Subtones – an incisive and psychologically revealing method of achieving another level of depth in understanding any birth chart. In short, using Subtones Analysis is a method of synthesizing the major chart factors in any person’s chart in a simple, quick way than people at any level of astrological knowledge can easily learn and reliably use. I feel that the Subtones approach is extremely valuable and revealing and will be self-evidently useful for those who experiment with it. I would like to convey to all readers and students of my work that Subtone Analysis is now one of the first things I do when looking at any chart for the first time. Also, there is no longer a plan for a book-length treatment of Subtones, as I originally imagined, so this is the only in-print source of this theory and method as I prefer to present it.

Chapter 3 consists of a concise presentation of a number of ideas, observations, and interpretive guidelines that I call axioms– most of which have not been included in my previous books. In going through my many notes and files during a recent reorganization, I realized that quite a number of valuable observations and often evocative or intriguing theories merit some form of publication. Some of these ideas are extremely traditional and simple, but seem to be often neglected today. Others may be a bit controversial, but I hope they stimulate thought and reflection when they are applied to real astrological cases or situations.

The Interview in this book is the longest, most probing and wide-ranging one I have done; and it has already (at least in parts) been translated into Serbian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, as well as published in entirety in The Mountain Astrologer magazine. In it, I answer questions about my background and early years in astrology studies, some people who influenced me, and my views on various central issues in astrology’s current practice and potential future development. It has enough significant commentary and history of my work and thought that I felt it should be in a more permanent form. It is basically unchanged since the London interview, except for a brief addendum, and it appears here in book form for the first time.

Another area of study that has immediate implications for astrological tradition, theory, and the interpretation of individuals’ charts which I would like to bring to the fore is the subject of planetary speed or velocity. The importance of this issue has become more and more apparent to me over the past two decades. And it is a factor that is rarely noticed these days when most charts are calculated by computer and thus are visually presented as finished maps with perhaps a few planets marked Retrograde. Few practitioners today check the ephemeris to determine whether a planet was turning retrograde or direct, was stationary, or was moving very slowly while approaching its stationary position.

When studying the charts of famous people or when having dialogues with clients, for many years it was increasingly obvious to me that the Retrograde Planet lore was mostly superstition – couched as it was in fear and negative language. When I looked closely at the lives and experience of real people, there seemed no correlation to the old-fashioned notions about retrograde planets being negative or somehow debilitated or obstructed. In fact – quite the contrary! Quite often those with amazing mental brilliance seemed to have a Rx Mercury, while great athletes often had a Rx Mars. The more I looked at many cases, the more apparent it became that the essential factor that was truly and reliably meaningful was the speed of the planet; i.e., how slow it was going relative to its average velocity. This seemed far more important and indicative of
