CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION
Greetings fellow travelers on the path to conscious parenting!
By choosing to parent children, or to serve as a friend, educator or informal mentor, you have taken up an admirable and challenging task. Committing yourself to the care and education of children sets you on a journey that is ripe with enormous opportunities for personal growth, expanded love, joy, self-understanding and compassion. It also introduces you to areas of your own life that may have been unexamined, confronting you with limiting beliefs and issues of your own self-esteem.
This Workbook is the companion volume to Conscious Parenting by Lee Lozowick (Hohm Press, 2010), and is designed be a useful map and travel
guide for you on this adventure. The Conscious Parenting Workbook (like Conscious Parenting itself) aims to assist you in aligning with a big view of the subject—an overall context from which to parent and educate. Years of personal experience, combined with solid foundations shared with many great educators, have made Lee Lozowick’s Conscious Parenting a pragmatic handbook, much appreciated by his peers and by thousands of parents worldwide. But especially, and perhaps uniquely, his work relies on life-affirming principles culled from his own spiritual understanding along with those from other longstanding spiritual traditions. His work, then, speaks to the ways and means for transforming ordinary family life with children into a primary means of spiritual practice, including the inevitable challenge for work-on-self.
Thanks for joining us in this invaluable commitment on behalf of children everywhere.
WHO WE ARE
Lee Lozowick (1943–2010) was the devoted Heart Son
of the beggar saint and Godchild
of Tiruvannamalai, India, Yogi Ramsuratkumar (1918-2001), and a teacher and spiritual master in the Tantric tradition of the Bauls of Bengal, India. Lee’s work with his students and friends for over three decades involved his creed of kindness, generosity and compassion,
applied within the framework of daily life. For Lee, a devoted father of six children, the work of parenting, mentoring and educating children was central to his teaching, and he became an advocate for conscious parenting in all its many forms. From enlightened birth practices, breastfeeding, our use of language with children, the limiting of early exposure to technology and negative influences for youngsters, to the creation of environments of safety and sanctuary for our teenagers, Lee demanded that we look at everything, including ourselves. Our work was to recognize that our children would learn to be whole and healthy human beings by living with whole and healthy human beings.
The editors of this Workbook are all long-time students of Lee Lozowick. Some of us are parents, others grandparents, others friends of community families, some are mentors for children. We live in different places, interact with different children, and lead lives of busy involvement in our communities. Beneficially, each of us received Lee’s teaching firsthand, both in word and action, observing over many years his skillful means and powerful modeling of how to be with children.
HOW THIS BOOK CAME ABOUT
The inspiration for creating this Workbook followed soon after Lee Lozowick’s death in 2010, when many of us realized how much his legacy to humanity included this vital teaching, and that carrying on his work of conscious parenting was both our responsibility and our privilege.
