About this ebook
In an era of budget cuts, the community college President arouses faculty and student animosity with his expensive building program. When Maggie finds the college president hanging in the building’s stairwell, suspicion falls on her young friend Sly Miller. A world-class artist, his sculpture was supposed to be hanging in place of the body. That’s only the beginning of a twisty plot dealing with the aesthetics and business of art, a billion-dollar art-for-arms deal; political corruption and cronyism; and issues of art forgery and journalistic ethics, all capped off by a stunning denouement.
"Hornsby’s well-constructed eighth Maggie MacGowen mystery. . . offers a nuanced glimpse of campus life in the budget-crisis era, a plot with a nicely topical twist, and a cast of smart, appealing characters. Readers will cheer Maggie on as both new romance and fresh career opportunities beckon."

Wendy Hornsby
Wendy Hornsby (b. 1947) is the Edgar Award–winning creator of the Maggie MacGowen series. A native of Southern California, she became interested in writing at a young age and first found professional success in fourth grade, when an essay about summer camp won a local contest. Her first novel, No Harm, was published in 1987, but it wasn’t until 1992 that Hornsby introduced her most famous character: Maggie MacGowen, documentarian and amateur sleuth. Hornsby has written seven MacGowen novels, most recently The Paramour’s Daughter (2010), and the sprawling tales of murder and romance have won her widespread praise. For her closely observed depiction of the darker sides of Los Angeles, she is often compared to Raymond Chandler. Besides her novels, Hornsby has written dozens of short stories, some of which were collected in Nine Sons (2002). When she isn’t writing, she teaches ancient and medieval history at Long Beach City College.

Reviews for The Hanging
8 ratings1 review
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5As one of his last requests, Maggie's late husband detective Mike Flint asked her to find out what happened in one of his cold cases. A young gang member, Jesus Ramon, who also happened to be one of Mike's informants, simply vanished one day after Mike dropped him off. Everyone assumed that Jesus, who was an addict and a small-scale pusher, had died of an overdose or been killed in a gang disagreement and the body quietly disposed of. But Maggie is determined to fulfill Mike's wish, to give her search some credibility, she decides to make it the focus of her next television special. Delving into Mike's files and talking to his old colleagues, Maggie realizes she's onto something bigger than she expected when someone breaks into her house. The descriptions of documentary filmmaking and the grittier side of Los Angeles are wonderful, and Hornsby is an amazing writer. It's good to see her (and Maggie) again.
