      I love cockatiels! If there is anything anyone learns about me from the beginning it is that I love cockatiels, especially my cockatiels Mithril and Arwen.

      I did not always have birds. In fact, my family is very much a dog family. But from the moment I first saw a white cockatoo, probably at the local zoo, I always wanted a parrot, especially a white cockatoo. I always loved them. Getting a bird though was not easy. Every time I asked my mother for a bird, she flatly said no. For most of my childhood I heard no. That is until my mother, exhausted by my persistence, finally offered me a deal: I could get a budgerigar (what Americans call ‘parakeets.’) if I bought the bird, his cage, his food, and cared for him myself. I also was required to learn everything possible about budgerigars and prove that I knew what I was getting myself into. And those were just the main things she wrote down on the list of what I had to do.

      My mother’s intent was very clear at the time: make the terms for getting a bird so difficult that no normal child would be able to meet all the requirements. Looking back, I am glad she made it so difficult. Buying the bird myself (not easy to do when your weekly allowance for house work is only twenty-five cents) made me value him more. Doing the research along the way armed me with information that made his life happy and safe.

      Even with the best information a grammar school child could find, I had a steep learning curve with first my budgerigars (1981-1996) and then my cockatiels (1996 to present). Parrots are extremely intelligent. Even the most experienced aviculturist (a person who raises companion birds) is likely to encounter new situations and challenges with individual birds.

      In this guide, I will teach you how to prepare yourself and your home for your new arrival. We will talk about housing, play spaces, and foods you should have ready for your new arrival. We will also talk a little bit about what a cockatiel is and how you can make your first week with your bird as stress-free as possible.

      Remember when starting this journey that no cockatiel should ever be brought into a home that already has dogs, cats, or other predatory animals in it. Predators and prey never mix, no matter how much you may think you can trust your existing pet. All it takes is one split second of lapsed attention to end the life of your most beloved feathered friend. Please do not risk the life of your bird. Believe
