Account-Ability - Dr. Jim Sellner, PhD, DipC.

    Conversation

    Account-Ability Is a Team Sport

Top-performing teams we work with have expressed a real desire to build account-ability into their organization.

    Consider the following key questions:

Does each of your team members understand exactly what they are responsible for and how to fulfill those responsibilities? Yes __ No __

Do you, as team leader, set consistent expectations backed up with feedback and follow-up to promote account-ability? Yes __ No __

Do your new team members know exactly what’s expected of them - and why they need to be doing what they’ve been asked to do - on a 30-60-90 day basis? Yes __ No __

Your team members are self-managing - that is, you do not have to check up on them to make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Yes __ No __

Do you work with a standardized way of monitoring progress? Weekly? Monthly? Quarterly? Yes __ No __

When you have read this book and put the six-step account-ability process into action, you will be able to answer yes to all of the above questions.

    What Is Account-Ability?

Account-ability is driven by two human energies: will and skill.

Will is about the person or team working to complete the task or goal in spite of setbacks.

Skill is the person’s or team’s ability to carry out a specific task or goal to consistently produce the agreed upon results.

Most people, much to every manager’s chagrin, have to be taught why it is important to be account-able. They need to learn that account-ability is important because…

    1. their job depends on it.

    2. because without account-ability there is no freedom in this life.

The absence of account-ability means your life will be governed by have to, should’ve, could’ve, and would’ve. You will feel victimized by authority and circumstance.

If that isn’t motivation enough to jump on the account-ability bandwagon, I don’t know what is.¹

Account-ability is a learned skill powered by an internal motivation to use one’s unique talents.

If a team leader is not holding team members to account, he or she is teaching them to be incompetent and disengaged.

Teach people the how to’s and why’s of account-ability and they will become skilled and engaged.

¹. The bandwagon effect is a phenomenon whereby the rate of uptake of beliefs, ideas, and behaviours (both destructive and constructive) increases the more that they have already been adopted by others. As more people come to believe in something, others also voluntarily hop on the bandwagon.

The tendency to follow the actions, beliefs, or behaviours of others occurs because individuals directly prefer to conform, or because individuals derive status, power, and/or influence from other group members. You can be shunned if you don’t "hop
