    1. Getting Older Means Getting Fatter

    Myth: The older you get the more weight you’ll put on, thus having a big belly is justified!

    This topic is something I often debate with my father, who is presently overweight. He tries to convince me that the older I become, the more pounds I will pile on.

    Of course, he makes sure to remind me that it’s out of my control. He says that as you age and your metabolism slows down, so the force of nature takes over, and that's all there is to it!

    Fact: I always respond to this by saying it's simply not true. Okay, so we all know that the ability to gain muscles decreases the older we get, but that still doesn’t mean we can justify being overweight just because of a loss in muscle mass.

    According to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity by Dr. PT Williams, he states that older people don’t gain weight because of their age per se. The research suggests there are three other factors that are responsible for this problem:

    1. A greater intake of calories at a time when the body's metabolism is decreasing

    2. A more sedentary lifestyle which increases the amount of fat stored

    3. Little or no exercise using weights, thus decreasing muscle mass. [1]

    My experience is that the older people become, the harder they are to convince about the real health dangers associated with being overweight or obese.

    A lot of older folks can’t actually see why they should start working out when they have been living, and perhaps even enjoying, an inactive lifestyle for a good many years.

    In other words, the mere thought of seriously exercising at middle-age, and older, doesn’t exactly seem inviting for most. The majority would rather stay at home, put their feet up, and just drink and eat whatever they want when they want to.

    They probably think they've earned it, but the reality is that inactivity and an unhealthy diet can, and often does, send many people to an early grave.
