Set-up
In BE DiFFERENT or be dead: Your Business Survival Guide, I presented practical and proven ways any organization can Stand-Out from their competition, provide unmatched Value to their customers and WIN the competitive battle in the long run.
In BE DiFFERENT YOU! I will show you how you can personally Stand-Out in an organization where people strive to be successful among internal hungry competitors and limited advancement opportunities.
My 33+ year career taught me one thing: If you are not personally unique in some way, you don’t get noticed by the leaders in the organization.
Your ideas for change never influence its direction. The leaders never hear you. You give them no reason to. You are invisible. You are a member of The Herd.
On the other hand, if you Stand-Out as being someone who is extremely innovative, creative and committed to making the future better for the organization, the leaders will notice you and are anxious to listen to what you have to say.
My conclusion: BE DiFFERENT. You definitely have to be competent, but I have seen many competent people overlooked for the job they wanted and could do well in favor of another person who was ‘special’ and not like ‘the others’ in some relevant way.
My corollary: You don’t have to be ‘better’ - more education, more competent, smarter - than someone else to realize your career aspirations. You have to BE DiFFERENT.
Of course you can’t be a DiFFERENT Idiot either! Display the accepted level of competence; then build a BE DiFFERENT platform on it.
I faced tumultuous change in my career. I was on the firing line as a slow, predictable, regulated monopoly business transformed into an intensely competitive one with niche and global players. I saw a multitude of organizational structures put in place to address the ever changing strategies that were necessary to win.
I saw people who reported to me become my boss; I congratulated competitors as they got the jobs that I wanted and yet I continued to apply BE DiFFERENT YOU! Practices to build a very satisfying career.
Through all of this rapid-fire change I reported to many executives; over a 3-year period I reported to as many different CEO’s.
And I was still there after 33+ years – a pretty amazing track record.
It wasn’t merely luck that I was a survivor, although I am sure ‘The Lady’ played some part in it.
I always was a student of Standing - Out. My focus was always to BE DiFFERENT in how I carried out any responsibility I was given. I was able to gain the trust and confidence of my bosses.
I took control of my future. I created the conditions for my success.
This book presents the Practices I used to BE DiFFERENT from my colleagues in a highly unpredictable and changing environment. They will help YOU carve out a unique niche for yourself, be seen and heard and significantly influence the direction of your organization to make it even more successful.
Again I stress that the ideas I am offering you are practical (you CAN execute them) and proven (I SUCCESSFULLY implemented them in the real world). Trust that if you try them, you will begin to Stand-Out from others and reap the rewards for doing so.
This book is a portfolio of personal coaching tools for you.
Treat it as your Virtual Coach.
Let me know if I have the mark for YOU!

Chaos on the Inside
Organizations are microcosms of external markets in many ways.
Stiff internal competition is at play among the high potential and promotable now group, who are all vying for the few top jobs available.
New leaders are brought in to address key challenges that the organization faces, introducing change, uncertainty and causing risk for incumbents.
Numerous and inconsistent messages clutter the internal environment resulting in uncertainty around the values and priorities of the organization.
Hiring managers are unclear on the critical skills and experience required for a particular position, bending the requisites to suit a favored candidate. Often, people like to hire in their own image and not established job requisites.
Outside influences complicate internal organizational dynamics as Board members, key customers and other external stakeholders influence the decision making process.
Your success in advancing to higher levels in an organization depends on your ability to separate yourself from others; to Stand-Out from them NOT Fit-In with them.
Internal politics influence who gets selected and who does not for the key positions. It’s who you know rather than what you know that pre-determines the outcome.
Expense reduction programs are implemented to improve economic results thereby reducing organizational layers and the number of opportunities available.
Decision making inconsistencies can be observed among leaders in the organization often making it difficult for upward mobile people to get a clear picture of what they are expected to do in order to succeed.
Demand for the plum positions always exceeds the number of positions available, resulting in intense rivalries.
Your challenge is to develop a strategy that clearly spells out clear, relevant and compelling terms why YOU, and ONLY YOU, should be chosen for the position you seek over-and-above the multitude of others who throw their hat in the ring.
You need to stand out in the crowd of possible candidates as the one who has the experience, skills and currency to do what the organization requires.
YOU need to be perceived as the natural
