I feel a do it yourself book on self-hypnosis is necessary for people interested in achieving immediate results.

    This book represents a compendium of many areas of interest that I have observed with clients and associates. As you become proficient in the basic elements of Self-Hypnosis you have a valuable tool at your disposal. You can develop an infinite array of talents when the motivation strikes you. No job, no problem, no goal is out of your reach. You can give yourself post-hypnotic suggestions of your choice and to your liking.

    Since you know yourself better than anyone else, the subtleties which make up your life are so precise, only you can give yourself the kinds of suggestions which will enrich your life.     Introduction

    The phenomenon of hypnosis seems to many to be esoteric and mysterious, or at least beyond the range of easily learned behavior. Unfamiliarity, combined with some misconceptions about the use of hypnosis, share in placing it outside the scope of accessible adjuncts to self-management for many. But as a tool for self-management hypnosis is very easily learned and extremely efficient.

    This book is designed for those interested in learning more about self-hypnosis. It is written in a how-to style and offers a compendium of sample suggestions designed to effect change in a variety of areas related to self-improvement.

    The first part of the book explores the elements of hypnosis, based on writings and research of distinguished clinical hypnotists such as Milton Erikson, M.D. It reviews information about the nature and function of hypnotism.

    The second section of the book presents a compendium of hypnotic inductions, chosen to assist people with changing a wide variety of problematic behavior. It is not necessary to follow the suggestions to the letter. Tailoring them to meet your own needs is better than following them verbatim.

    To work with the suggestions, it might be easier to consider taping them, so that you can relax while concentrating on the message, and hear it presented in your own voice. Or, you can put yourself into a state of waking hypnosis, and suggest that you will be hypnotized while you read the induction of your choice.

    Fundamentals of Hypnosis

    Hypnosis seems slightly mysterious, but it is actually just a state of mind or state of consciousness. It has been called an altered state of consciousness, and as such compares to other states of consciousness, like sleep, drunkenness, panic or meditation.

    The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word hypnos. Meaning sleep. Yet hypnosis differs from sleep, as it differs from waking consciousness. In the ordinary waking state, the mind is engaged in very complex, active behavior. It is busy scanning the environment and maintaining a sort of pan-alertness. It is generally too busy to record suggestions thoroughly enough to make them stick. The kind of attention to specific suggestion available through hypnosis is not possible in normal consciousness. Thus, to be hypnotized is to focus attention, and concentrate intently.

    When concentration is extremely intense, amnesia may occur, meaning the hypnotized person might not remember the experience—as if they were sleeping. It turns out that most people report being fully aware of their surroundings, even when on stage. It is true that while hypnotized, an individual is less aware of non-goal related stimuli (the goal being remaining hypnotized, or receiving a suggestion). Room conditions, extraneous noises, and visual distractions still register but have less impact upon concentration, and the person hypnotized becomes far more receptive to suggestions.

    A perplexing thing about hypnosis is that the exact mechanism of transcending the boundary between waking consciousness and hypnosis is not fully understood. The question of how one enters the hypnotic state can be described, but not fully explained.

    In other words, we know how to make it happen, but not how it happens. Hypnosis happens when awareness is suggestively managed so that a narrower scope of attention and concentration occurs. Relaxation often facilitates the process.

    So, how does a person interested in hypnotizing themselves manipulate their awareness? In the beginning, concentrating on relaxing will result in hypnosis. With practice, you can key the hypnotic response, and become relaxed as a fringe benefit.
