The full moon was high when Matt woke. He got up from the bed and stared out of the window at the moon’s haunting light. It illuminated his entire yard, turning the lush grass milky white with hints of blue. He fell to his knees, holding himself up against the window ledge, wanting to surrender to the dark, to the pull of the sorrow, to the depths of a dreamland wrought with guilt and sadness.

Sometimes he almost saw Alec crossing the yard to him, climbing through the window and washing Matt in sweet kisses and holding him in a warm embrace. He could almost smell him. It had been months since Alec left and Matt knew he wasn’t coming back.

Matt got up and closed the window shade. He slipped into his bed and tried to sleep. In his head he heard the shower of his master bathroom running, hot, steamy water washing over Alec’s taut body. There were many times he listened to him washing off the dirt and grime from a late night on the construction site. He would sometimes join him in there or wait for him to come to bed and wrap himself around him, soaking in the amber-scented soap or the heat of his body.

No! He had to stop this. It would only drive him crazy. Why was he doing this? It wasn’t his fault… he did nothing wrong. He only wanted Alec to have everything… maybe that was it? Maybe he gave too much. Paying for everything. Giving Alec extravagant gifts. It was part of why he went for the Director position at work. He wanted more, more for Alec. Maybe even had asked him to quit his job and stay home every day. Yes, of course he got that promotion right before Alec left but it was an empty victory. Mister corporate, mister power suit didn’t give two shits about being Director of Sales now. His world was shattered and all the money in the world wouldn’t change that.

This was the same mistake he made with every man. He wanted to shower them in comfort and material things. He wanted a stress-free relationship where everything just fell into place and they didn’t have to work at it. Life was rarely like that and Matt was finally beginning to figure that out. He offered more than just a big wallet and it was time he started showing other guys the other sides of him… warmth, nurturing, support. Yeah, he’d work on that…maybe someday.

###

Another hollow, listless day at work came to an end but as Matt crossed his office parking lot he refused to drive straight home and wallow in an empty house one more night. Nope. This time, he drove in the opposite direction and headed into the city.

He loosened his tie and unbuttoned his shirt collar. He ran his fingers through his hair and let his perfect part get a bit tousled, wiping some of the gel out of it. He watched the suburban sprawl fade as the darkness crept into the streets and shadowed the trees.

Matt followed the highway for a few miles, staring at the streetlights along the edge,
