Chapter 1 At the Philosopher’s Table
Roland Farber was sitting with his friends around a table in a coffee house in Syracuse, New York drinking espresso and discussing the problems with the world injecting a little humor here and there. Roland was quite popular with the gang at The Fellowship Coffee House. He was sitting between Rob and Abe and across from Moe and John. The crowd he hung with was made up of middle aged men like himself. Rollie as his friends called him was generally the life of the party. He dressed like a hippy and wore his hair long and sported a full beard. He kept his black hair and beard well trimmed and all in all fit right in with the coffee house crowd.
Rolland was married to a factory worker named Betty and had three young children; Ben was 8 years old, Shirley was 11 years and Peter 15. He worked as a contract computer programmer making a good wage but was currently between jobs. He was very good at what he did. He was taking a vacation between contracts because he felt like it. He could find work immediately if he wanted to.
He and his family lived nearby in a middle class neighborhood in a 3 bedroom ranch style house with a kitchen, living room and a basement family room with a pool table. The family cat was called Puss and the dog was Sport.
The coffee house had several tables the largest of which was occupied by Roland’s crowd. They called it The Philosopher’s Table because of the varied subjects discussed there. Today the discussion was centered on 19th century and early 20th century literature and The Civil War. Rolland was quick to inject the comment that the term civil war was an oxymoron. John, the only black man in today’s crowd added not only was the war not civil, but it didn’t solve any problems.
Moe spoke up it helped with the overpopulation problem.
Right you are.
Abe added.
Ralph, the proprietor of the shop came around about then with an order pad. You guys are taking up space but you aint ordered much.
So a couple of them ordered more espresso. Ralph was just about to complain again when Rolland ordered a donut. That seemed to satisfy the owner temporarily. When Ralph came back with the order Rolland said that he wanted to buy coffee for the rest of the table. Ralph knew that most of the guys had no money but he walked away contented for now.
The group was joined by Frank and Rex. They
