Prologue
Griffin O’Reilly woke with a start. The house was still, yet something felt out of place. His eyes scanned the pitch black room, looking for anything not normal. There! A faint noise coming from the kitchen. A glance to his left showed that his lover lay sleeping peacefully. Not wanting to wake Justin, he slipped from the bed quietly. The drawer in the bedside table opened with a slight squeak that had him wincing as he drew it out. Reaching inside, he removed the Glock that he kept just in case. He’d turned in his badge after leaving his last precinct, the life of a cop having worn on him until he couldn’t take it anymore.
The bedroom door stood open, beckoning him into the waiting darkness of the hall and the rooms that lay beyond. He crept on silent feet through the house, checking rooms as he went. There was a faint light coming from the kitchen, even though he remembered turning out all the lights in the house before retiring for the night. Griffin knew he hadn’t left the light on, since he’d checked everything twice before retiring for the night. Unless Justin woke at some point and turned it on, there had to be an intruder in the house.
His heart hammered in his chest as his fingers tightened on his weapon. Easing along the wall, he chanced a peek around the corner. A man dressed all in black and wearing a ski mask stood at the counter, a gun within his reach. Griffin felt a rush of adrenaline surge through his body as he contemplated his options. One wrong move could prove to be fatal, and leave Justin completely vulnerable.
Griffin crept around the corner, his gun trained on the intruder. He was about to make his presence known when he heard a shuffling sound behind him. Whipping around, his gun pointed straight at Justin, he quickly checked his weapon as he saw his lover stumbling his way toward him. Fuck! He needed to get Justin out of harm’s way and quickly.
What’s going on, Griff?
Justin asked in a groggy voice. I woke up and you weren’t in bed.
Griffin opened his mouth to shush his lover when he heard the unmistakable click of a gun being cocked. His body froze, his shoulders and back tensing as his hand flexed on his weapon. His pulse escalated until he thought his heart would pound right out of his chest. Slowly turning his head, he saw the intruder standing in the kitchen doorway, his weapon trained on Justin.
Turn around nice and slow,
the man said his voice deep and gravely, or your lover will be breathing his last.
Griffin lifted his hands and turned, his breath coming out harsh and uneven.
Drop it,
the man said, motioning for him to toss his gun aside.
