The Yellow Brick Road to Better Living - Dr. Nicole Gehl
Introduction
In everyday life, we are all faced with a variety of problems. Most of the time, we are able to manage these, but others they seem as overwhelming as a cyclone in the mind. The Wizard of Oz is a story of self-development and growth, popular with generations of children and the adults they become.
The main characters view themselves as flawed in some way because of something that each falsely believes they lack;
Fed up with the world around her, Dorothy longs to be in a different place, but as soon as this happens she realizes that the comfort she seeks can only be found being within herself.
The Scarecrow, with all of his great ideas, still thinks he needs a brain in order to think,
The Tin Man, in spite of his empathy, deeply feels that he needs a heart in order to feel,
And the Lion does not realize his own ability to act with courage until he bravely lets go of old behaviours and chooses new ones based on how he wants to live in the world.
Dorothy always had the power to come home to herself, just as the others were never without the resources they wished for. None of them can see this, though, until they have done their own work, and travelled the sometimes twisting, broken and uneven Yellow Brick Road. In life, all of us at some times stumble on ideas and behavior patterns, but in spite of the messiness, a golden path forwards can still be found.
The Yellow Brick Road to Better Living is a workbook written to help you deal with your challenges using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and other evidence based techniques tested by behavioural scientists shown to offer relief from a wide range of emotional and behavioural problems, including depression, anxiety, phobias, sleeping difficulties, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress, panic disorder, eating disorders and pain management.
Within these pages, you’ll journey to Oz and get an understanding of how what you think is connected to how you feel physically and emotionally, and consequently what you do.
Through self-monitoring, psycho-education and experimentation, you’ll develop greater self-awareness and thinking habits.
Happiness is not dependent on having perfect life experiences, or the good will of witches or wizards. It’s a process, and not always a straightforward one. Well-being is ultimately the task of the individual.
Your journey is ultimately down to you.
How to Use This Book
This book is not intended as a replacement for professional support, but rather a self-help practice workbook to be enjoyed. It’s meant to be fun, using a fairytale to help the reader experience increased self-awareness, and evaluate their thinking habits.
For the Young at Heart:
Read the story from start to finish. You already know it, of course, but there are some key insights to the characters and their processes which could help you with your own. You know the brainless Scarecrow, but here you’ll meet the Scarecrow whose brain allows him to quote Nietzsche, but not to manage his own busy mind, the Tin man whose floods of emotion has him locked in Thought Prisons, and the Lion whose aversion to action keeps him in vicious cycles of avoidance. In Oz Dorothy illustrates the way in which sensations in the physical body impact thoughts feelings and behaviours.
For Parents and Other Caring Adults:
CBT with children needs to be fun, interesting and playful.
First and foremost, if a child in distress isn’t able to connect with the material and strategies offered, he or she can not benefit from it.
Feel free to use the exercises in the book as they seem relevant. Read the story and complete the exercises from start to finish, or jump around.
Remember: children do not typically ask to start any form of therapy, and may not share the concerns with the adults around them. Additionally, readiness to engage in a
