The Breakthrough Mind - Douglas Berger
Author
Opening Remarks
Breakthroughs come from your ability to change your perspectives leading to taking different actions. Breakthrough is about what is possible not what is predictable. It is about you accomplishing something remarkable, bold, and imaginative. If you possessed the skills of The Breakthrough Mind where would you or could you take your life, your business, your career? And what would be possible if you could encourage and help to develop those skills in the people who matter most to you - your family, friends, colleagues, staff?
If going after a meaningful, challenging accomplishment lights you up, energizes you, then this is book for you. Perhaps you are a business leader who wants to realize an extraordinary future for your organization. Maybe you are an entrepreneur who has a promising business concept. Are you a general manager who wants to achieve step-change performance? Or you might be an individual contributor with an innovative idea and a burning desire to make a difference.
Or you could be somebody just like my son, Nick, determined to be the best little league baseball player he can be; or my daughter Katey who wants to the best gymnast and dancer around; or are you somebody like Jessica frustrated in finding a job? Charlie wants to live life more adventurously and actually do the things he dreams. And there’s Margie who has really great, big ideas yet holds herself back from speaking up. Can you relate?
Wherever you fall in the spectrum is fine. The Breakthrough Mind is for you if you are ready to go for bold and extraordinary accomplishments.
I consider myself an explorer in the field of human endeavor and have been at it for most of my life. Professionally, I guide executives and their people in achieving step-change results, redefining what is possible for them and for their organizations. I have spoken to, educated, coached and empowered thousands of people around the world. My passion is harnessing the human spirit and unleashing new possibilities for businesses, for organizations, for individuals.
Over the last 30 years I have dedicated myself to unlocking and setting free that extraordinary side of being human which strives for the next edge of accomplishment and demonstrates inspired performance. I have taken on most of my own challenges in the spirit of Breakthrough, including writing this book, which began as one of my own Breakthrough journeys.
The rules for ordinary success are
not the rules from which Breakthroughs spring.
Ordinarily, life is about filtering out the uncomfortable, the unfamiliar, the new, the unlikely. Therefore, when faced with bold aspirations, unprecedented challenges and disruptive events, the rules, the plays, and the skills we have developed for gradual success are not at all well suited to being able to accomplish a Breakthrough. Operating from those practiced habits will derail our bold ambitions.
I don’t know about you, but I was never formally taught how to walk into situations and see things with a fresh perspective. The education system never taught me different ways to think and it didn’t give me the tools for original thinking. It certainly didn’t advocate for different ways of thinking that would work better than others depending on the problem to solve or the challenge to meet. In fact, formal education did its best to teach me exactly the opposite, which was that there is a right way to think and a right way to solve every problem. Original thinking will just get you into trouble.
The BIG idea behind The Breakthrough Mind
Producing Breakthroughs is a learnable skill
We have all had the experience of learning new skills thereby accomplishing new goals. So I know that Breakthrough is something you can do. In the course of this book, I will guide you through building both the mental mindset and the skills of incorporating Breakthrough into your life.
The skills of Breakthrough reach far beyond the now common vernacular out-of-the-box
thinking. Many people have bold, imaginative ideas. Few act skillfully on them. The Breakthrough Mind always comes back to taking action, just NOT the action that you would ordinarily take. As you read this book, you will be learning how to originate new courses of action. The ability to take these actions IS A LEARNABLE SKILL.
The 9 Skills of The Breakthrough Mind
1. Map the journey
You will learn to make a crude map of the journey to your destination just as an explorer would, knowing that you will encounter big obstacles along the way and knowing that as much as you plan you can’t plan for everything. Then you will learn to refine the map as you gain insights, learnings, experience and skill. So you will be learning how to map your journey, and how to take action in the midst of adversity.
2. Break free of personal limits
You will learn to recognize and transcend the mechanisms by which we limit ourselves. You will learn how to operate outside your
