Welcome to Husbands, Wives, God: Weekly Devotions, a 52-week devotional for couples that desire to grow closer to each other as they grow closer to God. Each week, as you and your spouse interact with a married couple from the Bible, you will find opportunities to talk, share, reflect, and pray with your spouse in unique and meaningful ways.

In many ways, biblical marriages are culturally different from our present-day marriages. Yet, the truth, power, and evidence of God’s handiwork in each relationship offers relevant, insightful, relationship-changing truths for today’s husbands and wives. As you and your spouse read and discuss the marriages of the Bible, meditate on their relationship truths and watch God divinely build and grow your marriage. Be Blessed!!

    How to use this devotional

In this devotional, you will discover an array of opportunities to strengthen your marriage by incorporating the wisdom and power of God’s Word into your marriage. Below are a few ideas to help your marriage get the most out of the Husbands, Wives, God Devotional:

Begin this devotional on the corresponding week of the year. For example, if you have received this book as a wedding or anniversary gift in June, then you may want to begin in about the 26th week. This will ensure that the weekly selections remain seasonally accurate throughout the year.

Pick one day of the week to read the devotional section. Sections can be read either individually or with your spouse. If you are finding it either uncomfortable or difficult to schedule time to read together, then read the devotions separately.

Spend a few days thinking about the depth of God’s activity in the life of the biblical couple and how God’s involvement in their marriage applies to your marriage.

Designate a day, time, and quiet place in which you and your spouse can come together to discuss, pray, and reflect on the message of the biblical marriage you’ve read about. I would suggest setting aside at least an hour to reflect on and discuss the devotion for that week.

During or after your time of meditation, write a prayer to God for your marriage.

When this devotional refers to Meditation, it should be understood as Christian Meditation, different from other forms of meditation, which typically use mediation to empty the mind. Christian Meditation is the filling of the mind with the truth of God’s Word (The Bible). So embrace each week’s meditation points as an opportunity to think deeply on His activity in your marriage.

All Scripture references use the New American Standard Bible (NASB) translation, unless otherwise noted.

Some devotions, i.e. week 15, contain quotes from Edward’s book, Husbands, Wives, God.

Finally, stay in touch! It is always encouraging to hear the testimonies of couples who are growing together in Christ. A prayer for your marriage

Lord, I pray a special blessing of love and commitment on every marriage that You expose to these marriages of the Bible. Every relationship ordained by you has the power and ability to thrive in your presence, so bless each marriage in a special way.

I pray that where a relationship is strained or struggling, You would give insight and encouragement through the marriages of old. Where relationships are strong, I pray that You would make them stronger, so that they may continue to be a source of encouragement and wisdom for others. In all cases Lord, I pray that each week a couple will grow closer as they grow closer to You. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Jethro, Moses’ Father-In-Law: Listening to Wise Counsel

    Read Exodus 18

Exodus 18:17-18a Moses’ father-in-law said to him, The thing that you are doing is not good. You will surely wear out...

Exodus 18:24 So Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he had said.

Sylvester Wadsworth Nealy married Thelma Joyce Hill on December 31, 1935. The marriage lasted 59 years, until Sylvester passed in 1994. From their marriage came two children, four granddaughters and one grandson—me. Through their marriage, I learned how to respect a woman, how to be patient in a relationship, how to wait on the Lord in marriage, and when to seek the Lord in prayer rather than deal with my wife in anger.

Theirs was a faithful model of marriage that has stuck with me and outlived the lives of both my grandfather and grandmother. As powerful and instrumental as my grandparents’ marriage has been to me personally, there are over thirty marriages in the Bible that can prove far more effective to all who encounter them. Regardless of what you or your spouse have or have not had modeled for you, the marriages of the Bible can provide your marriage with reliable solutions and insights. Yes, their culture was much different from ours, yet their message remains clear: Husbands and Wives can build a better relationship with each other as they build a better relationship with God.

The value of relying on the wisdom of an older, wiser couple can be seen through the biblical icon, Moses. We know Moses as the great leader of Israel who led them out of Egypt and eventually out of their forty-year wilderness experience. He was also the same man that went up on the mountain (twice) and received the Ten Commandments from God. But this great man, who was called a friend of God and was able to hear from God like none other in his day, also received great wisdom from his father-in-law, Jethro the Priest. Jethro’s years of marriage and ministry afforded him insight that proved invaluable to the much younger Moses.

A mentor relationship does not have to be a formal relationship, nor must the couple have a perfect marriage, in your view. What is essential is that mentors, like Jethro, can be counted on in critical times to provide good God-centered wisdom.

For your marriage, draw from the wisdom of more than thirty marriages found in God’s Word. As you venture through the marriages of the Bible this year, you will find many more marriage coaches like Jethro who will bless your marriage.

    Meditations for the Week:

What older, wiser couple is in our circle that we can learn from?

What one positive example from another couple can we implement into our relationship.

What one negative attribute from another couple should we avoid?

    Read and discuss how Titus
