•Who should you approach for sponsorship
•How to network with potential sponsors
•How to prepare the sponsorship proposal
•The importance of following up the sponsorship proposal

•How to promote your sponsor to ensure ongoing sponsorship
•How to stay out of trouble and protect your reputation and your sponsor’s reputation

Today, sport is a business and as a young athlete, your business starts very early in life. Young athletes are expected to be professional. Professionalism as far as sponsorship is concerned, starts prior to sending a letter to a potential sponsor. It starts with your behaviour on and off the sporting field, even as a young athlete. How To Set Your Sponsorship Target
Where do you want to take your sporting career this year, next year or in five years’ time?
Perhaps your goal is to participate in your chosen sport at a local level; perhaps your goal is to participate at a regional, state, national or international level. Your goal is going to play an important role in determining the level of sponsorship you would like to secure to support that goal.
This is the first question you need to answer before you consider speaking to a sponsor or sending out any letters. The potential sponsor is going to want to know what goals you want to achieve in your sport. Sponsors need to see your passion, commitment, dedication and professionalism when it comes to achieving your sporting goal.
Perhaps your long term goal is to represent your country at the Olympic Games or at international level in your sport. Breaking this goal down will help you set some short term goals to assist you to achieve your long term goal in five, ten or even fifteen years’ time.
If you are a young athlete, discussing this goal with your parents or your coach can help you get started on the road to your future sporting career. If you are a parent of a young athlete, it is a good idea to discuss the sporting goal with their coach.
What is your short term goal?
A good place to start to help clarify the goal that you have in your sport, is to think about where you want to take your sporting career in the next twelve months. In which events or competitions do you want to compete? What do you want to achieve at these events? If you are in an individual sport, fr what ranking do you want to aim? If you are in a team sport, what is your team aiming to achieve?
It doesn’t matter what level of sport you are currently participating in, this is a question all athletes need to ask themselves each year and plan accordingly. If planning isn’t involved, then, for a lot of young athletes their sporting career may stumble due to a lack of finance. This would be a shame if you have the skills and talents to make it to Olympic level or to the world level in your sport.
Write down the goals you want to achieve in the next 12 months.
What events are involved to help you achieve your short term goals in the next 12 months?
Breaking down the short term to smaller parts will make achieving the goal a lot easier. What events are you going to participate in during the next twelve months? Make a list of the events that you want to participate in which will help you to achieve your goal.
Deciding on which events you are going to participate, will give you an idea of the cost to achieve your goal for the next twelve months. Don’t forget, you may have training camps or other events to prepare yourself for the main sporting event. There could be uniforms and other requirements in your sport too.
A lot of young athletes are focusing on more than one sport until they discover what their passion really is and where they wish to take their sporting career. This could involve a heavier demand on finances for your sporting career.
What will my sporting goal cost me for the next 12 months?
