The dead man came splashing through the water of the small creek after Simon. Simon reached dry ground and whirled to face him. The man's gray-toned face was twisted in a feral snarl of hunger and rage. In his hands, Simon clutched a double barrel shotgun, but he knew better than to use it. The noise the weapon made would only draw the other dead folk in the area to him. Still, he had to do something. Though the dead weren't as fast as living humans, they were far faster than the slow shambling monsters in the horror movies Simon had watched growing up.

Simon waited for the dead man to close the distance between them, meeting him head on with an upward swing of his rifle. The rifle's butt smashed into the underside of the man's chin. With a grunt, the dead man flopped over into the water. Simon didn't wait for him to get up. He took off running again, his legs pumping beneath him. His breath came in ragged gasps as his muscles burned from sheer exhaustion.

Bursting out of the trees, onto the road, Simon paused to take stock of his surroundings. He knew he had to be close to the rallying point, but otherwise had no idea of where he was.

The sound of gunfire to the east pointed the way and he was moving again. The unit he was part of wasn't really military anymore. Most of the soldiers who had been a part of it when he joined up were dead now themselves. The bulk of those who remained were men and women, like him, who had been swept up into the war with the dead regardless of whether they wanted to fight or not. There was safety in numbers and if you wanted to keep breathing, you either became a soldier or struck out on your own. Simon wasn't much of a solo act so when Captain Ringo and his unit showed up on the doorstep of his house, he'd let them in without a fight. Ringo and his men had looted what was left of Simon's supplies, adding them to their own and him to their ranks. Ever since that day, Simon had lived life on the run with the unit, traveling from town to town, killing the dead, and taking what they needed to keep going. Simon wasn't proud of some of the things he had done since enlisting, but at least he was alive.

His squad had been sent ahead to scout the local countryside. This was farm country and Captain Ringo estimated the dead's numbers would be minimal out here. That mistake had cost his entire squad their lives. The very first farm they had stumbled upon was teeming with the things. There was no choice but to engage them. Five heavily armed soldiers were more than a match for a few dozen
