Chapter One: Introduction
The House of Bernarda Alba
by Federico Garcia Lorca was first performed in 1945. The Spanish title of the play is La Casa De Bernarda Alba.
Although several commentators often group this play with his other plays Blood Wedding
and Yerma
as a rural trilogy,
Federico Garcia Lorca did not have any plan to include this play in the said trilogy.
At the time of the playwright’s murder, Trilogy of the Spanish Earth
was unfinished.
The playwright gave a subtitle to the play and it described the play as a play of women in the villages of Spain. It was the last play written by the author. Although the writing was over on 19th of June 1936, it could only be performed for the first time in the year 1945.
Lorca was murdered during the Spanish Civil War but in his lifetime the play was never performed. The play revolves around the events in the life of Bernarda Alba and her five daughters.
The mother, Bernarda Alba happens to be sixty years old. She lives in a house in Andalusia with her five daughters named Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio, and Adela.
La Poncia, the housekeeper, and Maria Josefa, Bernarda’s mother, also live in that house with them.
The playwright has deliberately excluded male character from the action. Owing to this technique, the high level of sexual tension prevails throughout the play.
Pepe el Romano is the suitor of Angustias, but at the same time he is the love interest of Bernarda’s daughters, however, he never appears on stage.
Passion, conformity, love, and repression are some of the major themes with the play explores in great details.
The play also tries to explore the effects of men upon women. The absence of male characters helps increase the tension among the female characters in the play.
Unfortunately, the conservative Nationals assassinated Lorca, and consequently he was never able to see The House of Bernarda Alba
produced.
The play very expertly depicts the tyranny and it seems to evoke the tyranny of Franco’s party which consequently caused Lorca to be murdered.
Every line of the play has its unique significance in the context of the storyline and that very quality
