About this ebook

A company's biggest liability may often be the misguided values and integrity of its own leadership! DiBrito's book exposes problems that occur when the leaders in a corporation are unaware of the lack of responsibility of the top employees, or choose to ignore transgressions of ethical behavior. A company can rise or fall through the actions of its executives. DiBrito's interesting book brings to the fore so much the public, or even a corporation itself, is often not aware of. EXECUTIVE MISBEHAVIOR should make an impact on the conscience of America's corporate leaders.

    About The Author

    Paul DiBrito

Paul DiBrito has held executive positions in several large corporations – excellent and successful companies, as well as a few that did not fare well over the years. Currently, he is the Principal of Cornerstone Consulting Services, a consulting company he started to help companies that want to grow and/or to reduce costs. He uses his experience to advise companies how to grow or to fix their corporations. In the past several years, he has consulted with large and established companies, and small to medium growth companies as well as startup companies.

He has been an officer of several companies and has held positions as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Development Officer, Sr. Vice President, Vice President and Director. Not surprisingly, he has also had unofficial titles such as The Change Agent, The Cost Containment Czar, The Axe Man, The Chairman’s Guy, Mr. Fix It, The Cheap B@#$&#@d and even Saint Paul - but he tries to forget those.

He has overseen areas such as Operations; Merchandising; Corporate Procurement; Real Estate & Construction; Maintenance; Cost Containment & Capital Spending; Car, Truck and Airplane Fleets; Travel and Office Services. Furthermore, he has touched almost every major department of several organizations, and even minor areas such as Credit Cards, Cell Phones and Dues & Subscriptions. Because of his extensive knowledge of single store operations as well as multi unit programs and warehouse and corporate office operations, many of his consulting assignments have focused on strategy and growth, as well as on cutting cost and implementing procedures to reduce expenses.

He says his motto is CHEAPER, FASTER, BETTER because he has always had an attitude of thrift and a love of challenge. His cost-conscientious ways were well noted and usually well received – unless they interfered with an executive’s excessive need for luxury or comfort – which is what this book is all about. How many times have you heard the executive leaders of corporations stressing the need to the masses to save money, spend less, work harder, cut payroll and eliminate bodies -- but then personally do the exact opposite?

Although the reader may think there is no way the ridiculous executive misbehavior exists, and wonder how executives can get away with it, DiBrito assures the reader that it does and they do – but hopefully only for a short time. One executive's bad financial decisions (as described in this book) could actually destroy a company, and the CEO may not even know what is going on until it’s too late. These people are supposed to be the CEO’s top advisors, confidants and trusted generals helping him run the company. DiBrito presents them as real people who may have gone astray because he believes that at times their 'entitlement' skews their ability to make the right decisions!

    Preface

I would like to make it clear from the start that this book targets the top levels of corporations, the COOs CFOs, EVPs, SVPs and in some cases the VP and Director positions. Naturally, there is a trickle-down effect to the lower levels, but I believe the root of the problem is mainly at the top. There is a great sense of entitlement – I’ve worked my way up the ladder therefore I DESERVE respect and all the rewards and perks that goes with it. A do as I say, not as I do mentality.

The main purpose of this book is not to focus on any potential misbehavior of the CEO. I believe that since the CEO has the ultimate responsibility (and blame) for the company’s overall success, he can basically do whatever he feels is needed to run the company. This book is mainly to enlighten the CEOs of potential troubles with their executive staff’s bad spending habits, but it is also for informing the general public about executives’ bad decisions and practices. From my personal experience, I am not positively sure some CEOs fully understand what is going on with their trusted confidants in charge of companies - the executive group.

I also want to be very clear that this book is about bad spending practices and bad fiduciary decisions. This book is not about illegal or immoral acts. It’s not about girl friends in paid apartments or sexual harassment. It’s not about failed marketing strategies or bad merchandise and operational practices. Do you remember the old detective show Dragnet? Sergeant Friday who always used to say – just the facts ma’am!? Well that’s what this book is about, just the facts. Do you also remember at the beginning of the show the announcer would give the disclaimer The names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent. In this book I’ve changed the names, locations, values and venues to protect the guilty. Those guilty of "executive Misbehavior" that is!

    Chapter 1

    Company Airplanes

If you have ever flown on a company airplane, you will understand when I say that they are AWESOME! When they are used properly, they can be a great time saving asset to any executive, but when abused by Executive Misbehavior, they become a very expensive personal toy. The misuse of company planes is a major corporate expense. Unfortunately, throughout the years the corporate jet has become a symbol of prestige and entitlement for company officers.

I have worked for/with several companies that had company planes, from one jet with two pilots to a fleet of five with over a dozen pilots. I would guess I have been on over 200 flights on these planes throughout my career.

    As I did my
