About this ebook

What is the word for a meeting of childlike minds revisiting an evergreen childhood, a process that has resulted in unveiling latent and potent forces? A freak occurrence? What happens when the teachers of the 20th Century era are brought into the equation? Serendipity? And if one were to imagine a reenactment of things past marked by events punctuated with attempts to coax and cogitate, fox and fulminate and whistle and boo and add present and future into this milieu, where are we headed? Read on to know more about it in the pages inside - everything about paragraph reading as an innovative educational tool to Ethiopian teaching techniques on the one side to greasing palms, hairstyle as a masculinity statement and Playing card caper on the other. Woven into this backdrop is a panoply of things human and material that covers Mothers, Goddess, Five senses and the like.

    A loving hand of Friendship

To live in the hearts you left behind way back in the Summer of 1973 in Neyveli is to believe that an invisible, long loving hand of friendship is now beckoning you. Just see the photo when we assembled for that last one time as a group, never to do so again, even as we prepared ourselves for the first stirrings of life outside our parental envelope.

Now, tell us, does it not make you feel that you should someway be in touch with us? It hardly matters what innings you are playing at this point in time… we respect where you are in your Life’s game, we just want to talk to you , we want to write to you and we want to be Friends as we were at school before we went our different ways. This time, hopefully, this journey in rediscovery of friendship will be more than transient because just like us, we believe that you will not let this Golden hand of Friendship pass us by. To many, it is already a once -in –a -lifetime experience. For some it has been nothing short of an awakening of our souls.

    ...........................................................................

Now come along and help us on this ‘Gravy Train’ of a most unusual kind in kindred spirit with all the grey hairs of ours reminding us in their unique way of the wisdom and maturity we have gathered in our journey in the last forty years.

We planted the ‘seeds of our friendship’ then, let us now reap ‘a bouquet of happiness’.

    1970-1973 – A CLASS ACT

This talks about some funny and strange incidents that took place in our class then. Every now and then the narrative would refer to some event in this year when we travelled down the memory lane and shared our remembrances of those days. What follows basically culls from what was discussed during those get-togethers.

Sleepiness – Thy name is Margabandhu

Margabandhu, of preaching Maths and Science fame, was an unique teacher in the annals of our school history. Having honed his snoozing skills to the extent of invoking it at the drop a hat and having turned the principles of ergonomics on its head, he often essayed a dive into the furniture, his head just a wee bit turned upwards to take advantage of the back rest. This began around 2 p.m, a more auspicious start to the class the humanity had not encountered till then. The sumptuous food by ‘mami’ (meaning spouse) had taken their toll, not to speak of the gentle manner he was carried to class from home by our dear AK, our class monitor, much in the manner of palanquin bearers except it was on a bicycle. How did AK pull off this Houdini act? Was M at the front or rear? There are two, three versions but I have a different slant to the whole thing. He sat at the back and long pedaled thereby allowing the master to lie spread-eagled with the seat becoming his head rest and front bars offering total support to torso down. Ok, where were we? We were in the class at 2 p.m. Having begun his auspicious odyssey into slumber at the beginning of his class, he had a remarkable in-built alarm that would never fail to gently tease him awake much in the manner of one turtle dove cooing to another at 2.20 p.m. By this time the Block 18 clique of Vijayan, John, Joe and Muthu had their plan ready. (Block 18 refers to a Block in Neyveli township - one amongst several blocks within some of which were located Primary Education schools). Knowing fully well that the class was more like relay race of paragraph reading, they engineered themselves to sit in the front row appearing all studious. M fell for it and hence the class had the inevitable start to its proceedings always by one of the ilk. Since the entire class consisted of reading from the book different paragraphs by different people, Block 18 clique 18/1, 18/2, 18/3 and 18/4 were through with their reading by 2.30 or so. Having become so exhausted from such hard learning, 18/1 would just effect a casual stroll to the door near which their table was strategically located very soon to be joined by the vanishing acts of 2,3 and
