Introduction
Testifying under oath is a serious conversation that may have very serious consequences. The obligation can be daunting because most people have never done it, have never been in a courtroom or arbitration conference room, and have no idea what to expect. This book gives you a plan to prepare yourself to testify calmly and well.
Every witness has a basic, simple goal: listen to each question, answer only that question, and tell the truth. Aim for that, and you can feel confident that testifying under oath needn’t be some strange, intimidating experience. It is not that different from other honest, serious conversations you have had.
For a witness, the back and forth of questions and answers under oath might be compared to the game of checkers—first the lawyer’s turn, then your turn, the lawyer’s turn, again your turn. Listen, speak, and listen
