What happens when you cross a Pug with a Jack Russell Terrier?

The answer is not the punchline to a joke, but the name of a new designer dog breed – the Jug

Jug dogs are a hybrid of the Pug and Jack Russell breeds, blessed with the best traits of both parent breeds and a giant heart to boot. These little dogs are full of love and energy, which makes them a great breed for both singles and families.

Within the pages of this book, you will find valuable information about this wonderful breed, covering topics including buying a Jug, caring for your Jug and preparing for potential health problems.

You will receive detailed information about the history of the breed, as well as its appearance and temperament – you will also receive in-depth tips and instructions for training your Jug.

A true Jug consists of 50% of each – meaning that one parent must be a purebred Jack Russell Terrier and the other a purebred Pug.

It is also possible, however, to breed an existing Jug dog back to one of the parent breeds. This will result in a Jug having more Pug or Jack Russell Terrier blood, but it will still be a Jug dog.

Given the fact that Jugs are a hybrid of two different breeds, the key to understanding what a Jug is like is to understand a little more about Pugs and Jack Russell Terriers.

How Is a Jug Different From Other Dogs?

The truth of the matter is that all dog breeds are different – that is why they are given different names and used for different purposes.

Though the many dog breeds we know today were likely developed from a smaller pool of breeds through years of crossbreeding and hybridization, every dog breed is unique.

What makes the Jug breed different from many existing breeds, however, is the fact that it can only be achieved by breeding together purebreds of two different breeds – the Pug and Jack Russell Terrier.

In addition to giving it a unique appearance, this hybridization creates a dog with a mash-up of the personality traits of both breeds.

    The Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier is a small and compact dog with a great deal of energy and a fun-loving personality. These little dogs are very intelligent and fearless – they can be trained for tasks that they will perform with the utmost dedication.

As suggested by the name, Jack Russell Terriers belong to the Terrier group and, like many dogs their size, they have an average lifespan between 10 and 15 years.

These little dogs are charming and fun to own, but they can be a little challenging at times. In this section, you will learn the basics about the Jack Russell Terrier breed, including its history and characteristics.

    Physical Characteristics

As a terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier is a fairly small dog. This breed tends to reach an average height around 10 to 15 inches (25 to 38 cm) and a weight between 14 and 18 lbs. (6 to 8 kg).

Depending on breeding, some Jack Russells stand only 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm), which makes the length of their bodies greater than their height – these dogs are referred to as Shorty Jacks.

In some ways, these dogs more closely resemble Dachshunds than Jack Russell Terriers due to their elongated body shape.

In terms of appearance, the Jack Russell Terrier has a compact body with short, muscular legs.

The eyes are dark and almond-shaped, while the ears are V-shaped and small. These dogs have drop ears that are carried forward and close to the head.

The tail is carried high and typically measures about 4 inches (10 cm) long, though it is sometimes docked.

The coat of this breed is smooth and predominantly white in color with tan, brown or black markings.

There are three different coat types – smooth, rough or broken (a combination of smooth and rough). Rough-coated Jack Russell Terriers have long hair, while smooth-coated varieties have a short, smooth coat.

    Personality and Temperament

The Jack Russell Terrier breed is widely known for being energetic and playful. Because they are so energetic, this breed requires plenty of daily exercise and does best when given a yard to run and play in.

Socialization is also incredibly important for this breed because these dogs tend to develop small dog syndrome – the tendency to become dominant and strong-willed.

Dogs that are not properly socialized at a young age may develop problems with aggression around other dogs and may not be adaptable to new situations later in life.

As family pets, Jack Russell Terriers tend to get along well with people. These dogs do best in an environment where there is a set routine, especially when it comes to training.

Though they thrive on structure, Jack Russell Terriers can become bored with repetition, so it is best to keep training sessions short.

This breed tends to do well with various dog sports such as flyball and agility – these sports will also give the dog a means of working off its excess energy, which will help prevent the development of problem behaviors.

In the home, Jack Russell Terriers are generally friendly toward children. It is important to teach children how to properly handle the dog, however, because
