About this ebook

Being the first female werecat enforcer isn't easy. Scars accumulate, but I'm stronger in so many ways.

As for my personal life? It's complicated. Choices worth making always are. Ever since my brother's death and my father's impeachment, it's all I can do to prevent more blood from spilling. Now our Pride is under attack by a flight of vicious thunderbirds. And making peace with our new enemies may be the only way to get the best of our old foe.

With the body count rising and treachery everywhere, my instincts tell me to look before I leap. But sometimes a leap of faith is the only real option….

This was a great book. This is the best book I have read in a long time. I cannot wait for Alpha to come out. I cannot wait to see how this series ends, though I am sad to hear that it is ending. There is a new species introduced in this book. I am not sure I have ever heard of this species in any other book, movies, etc. It was great to read about a completely new species. I am glad to see Faythe taking a more leadership role and is really starting to gain respect from everyone. I love watching as she matures and grows into her role. She will become a great alpha one day.

This book picks up right where the last one left off. I really like the world that Rachel Vincent has built in this series. The characters are well developed and I personally enjoy reading about them. Faythe is a strong willed, never give up kinda girl. I like that she isn't afraid to speak her mind, even if she knows nobody is going to like what she says. I like Marc, but sometimes he frustrates me. There are times when he seems blind to what is going on around him, which contradicts his position as an enforcer. I don't particularly care for the love triangle that seems to be developing with Faythe. Sometimes triangles don't bug me, but it depends how they are used. This one is just annoying to me. Why does she all of a sudden have to develop feelings for someone else.. (or at least it seems sudden to me). The main storyline of the book involving the thunderbirds is interesting and compelling. I found myself staying up late just so I could read more of the book. There are plenty of unexpected twisted in this book that left me saying "Oh my!" and left me wanting to finish to find out how it ends. And as I got closer to the end of the book the more frustrated with it i got. I understand that you have to have tension in a book in order to keep people coming back, but the Faythe and Marc constant back and forth is starting to get really annoying. As much as the triangle annoys me, the story is well written and pulled me in. I'm looking forward to picking up the next book and figuring out what happens next.

I'm left with little to say that won't be a spoiler other than, "Dangit, why can't more authors work in some polyamory instead of using the same old jealousy-based plots?" Because I do NOT find that entertaining or interesting at ALL! The Thunderbirds are very interesting, and I'd like to know a lot more about their culture than what we get here.I'm having a lot of trouble believing some of the political machinations in the plot, but I suppose I'm extremely naive about what people will believe when they want to ignore the truth.

I'm still loving this series, however, I wasn't as big of a fan of this installment. There was a lot of drama and death, but there was no real climax to the book. I was left wanting and if I had been reading a paper book, I would have thrown it.I am hoping that Alpha satisfies me.

This would have gotten 5 stars from me if Marc would have said "Jace, you can have her. I hope you two slimy, backstabbing, dishonorable sluts have a happy life together."But it was still a 4 star read. :)

"Shift" by Rachel Vincent is the fifth book in her "Shifters" series. This book considers to follow the life of Faythe Sanders and the South Central werecat pride. In this book the South Central Alpha, Faythe's father, is at risk of losing his seat as the Council chair. The pride is prepared to go to war to avenge the death of Faythe's brother and restore order to the council. While negotiating the political world that Faythe avoided for so long, she is also forced to confront the fact that she is in love with not one, but two, of her fellow enforcers. The kitten that she has sworn to protect is put in danger more than once throughout the story and the entire pride is faced with a species of shifter that they believed to be a myth.I have read this series and this book held up as well as the others. Ms. Vincent brings the life of a werecat into clear focus and keeps you intrigued with romance and suspense. You will finish this book and run out to get a copy of the next in the series, "Alpha". Although this book can stand alone, I highly recommend that you read the previous novels first as it will greatly increase your enjoyment of this book!

Review for “Shift” by Rachel VincentFaythe and her family of Werecats are trying to sort out an attempted political takeover. That is especially difficult when a group of shape shifting Thunderbirds attack the Pride. To save Kaci, a female teenage Tabby, Fathye and the boys will have to prove the prides innocence in crime against the Thunderbirds. As always, I enjoyed this book. This was the fifth in the series, each adds to the intricate world the writer has built.

I find reviewing books that are a part of a series difficult because I if you haven’t read the previous book(s) I don’t want to spoil anything for you. I have seen many bloggers add “spoiler warnings” before their review however as a curious reader I always ignore that message so I am left with the same dilemma. So bare with my hopefully spoiler free review and forgive me if it is not as in depth as others but this series is a gem of the urban fantasy genre so what I leave out you will hopefully gain when you read the series yourself!I began reading this series when the first book, Stray was released in June of 2007. I had read quite a few novels featuring shifters but never a novel focused on were cats. I was and still am enamored with Rachel Vincent’s magical and descriptive writing style, characters full of depth and genuineness, and ability to leave me screaming, “WHAT!” at the end of every novel. The fifth and second last book in the Shifter series titled, Shift is the best novel in the series so far; which is saying a lot since the entire series is by far one of the best in the urban fantasy genre. Now is where this review gets difficult as one of the best parts of this book is the romantic relationship(s). Without giving anything away this book had me with my face pressed against the pages, drinking tea out of a straw so I didn’t spill on myself (I don’t have good hand eye coordination when my eyes are focus on the pages), closeted in my room for three hours with a do-not-disturb sign on my front door, and my phone on silent. The relationship dynamics between Faythe, Marc, and ******* (see no spoiler) had me freaking out in books four and five and I am not yet over having to wait to find out more until Alpha, the final installment in this series is out. There are some truly fan-frickin-tastic authors out there in the Urban Fantasy genre; Laurell K Hamilton, Kelley Armstrong, and Kim Harrison to name a few, but with Shift, Rachel Vincent established herself as one of the top writers in her genre.

Another dark installment in this series. Although the central characters remain, more or less, intact, Vincent is unafraid of killing off her characters, often in quite gruesome circumstances. The love triangle is in full swing and although Faythe knows she will have to make a choice, the outcome of that choice is no longer certain nor, with the inevitable Pride War, is it certain that there will be a choice to make. This is a compelling and interesting series, with a fascinatingly flawed heroine at its heart.

I loved this book! I am only sad that I have to wait 7 months for Alpha to come out :( I also liked that we were introduced to a new species, the Thunderbird’s, they were unlike anything I have read about so I found them particularly intriguing. Their shifting ability is also really neat, they are so fast! I bet Faythe wishes she could shift that quickly. Anyways, in this story Kaci has been taken by the Thunderbird’s and Faythe finds herself trying to rescue her.I am going to vent about the Faythe/Jace/Marc puzzle for a minute and for the record I am totally team Marc. Marc has nowhere else to go literally, no other pride is going to take in a stray, especially Marc, but I fell like Jace still have has options if Faythe does not choose him. And, Marc has always been there believing in Faythe and Jace has grown up over night and just realized he wants to fight for Faythe, I don’t know, I just don’t feel the connection with them as much as I do with Faythe and Marc. I also hope that in Alpha none of those three die because I feel like that would be too easy of an ending. I really want her to choose and all parties to make it out alive.Ok, I am done with that now, I did like this book because it had a lot suspense and it kept me reading so fast I think I need to go back and re-read just so I pick up all the details I missed. I have to say I did think it was really clever have Jace, Marc and Faythe have to spend the whole book together I was just laughing at the tension it created for the book which made me just want to turn the page more to see what mess the three of them were going to get into next. Oh and Calvin Malone, yeah I still hate that guy, I hope he gets what is coming to him soon, in Shift he has stooped to a whole new level of low! Anyways, if you are a fan of this series then read Shift, it does not disappoint and watching Faythe continue to grow is just fascinating. Seriously, is it October yet?

Rachel Vincent will always leave you craving more but never lacking, so definetly do not miss out on your chance to experience this AWESOME series. I have spent months anticipating what this book would be, and I let me tell you it was everything I wanted and more. The appearance of the thunderbirds in this new book was very interesting; it allowed for a whole different angle and characters. I am impressed by culture of the Thunderbirds, and look forward to the options that should be expanding in the sixth and final book. Faythe is an awesome kick ass character that I never tire of. I was expecting this book to be more action than romance, and thinking that the relationships scenario would seperate now that Mark was back and Faythe is HAPPY. Although, it did not entirely work out that way, and to be totally honest I am excited about the turmoil that Faythe finds herself in. (If you haven't figured it out I love Mark, but I am also in love with Jace as well.) It also seems as though the level of tension in this book could have been cut with a knife, and I love it. I am disgruntled when I say that I am completely distraught at being left in this state of limbo about Faythe, Mark, and Jace. I felt like it was built up excellently, and now I am sitting here speachless because I have to wait for another book to find out anything. I know this is a sign of a wonderful author; that will keep you coming back for more, but this can not be healthy. Ha!I can't believe after only a couple days I have finished this book already, and now I am waiting yet again. If you have not experienced the Shifters series rush out to start it today. This is one series that you really should not miss.

Well, this story picks up right where Prey left off. Same bad guys killing the good guys, although this time Faythe is up against Thunderbirds, not just werecats. Minor characters keep being picked off, while major issues are never resolved only made impossibly more complex. The whole premise is rather predictable, and many times I found myself rolling my eyes in frustration at the triteness. Honestly, they're not bad books, but they're not good either.

Now, it's been a while since I read the last book in this series but it was really easy to pick up where it left off. Again, we're following Faythe through her turmoils with the pride and now she is an enforcer - the only female enforcer in her Pride. But along with the thought that her father could lose his place in the council, she also has to admit something to Marc about her and Jace. Really there is not a right time to tell him. Then things start to get really interesting. With everything that has been going on and her father trying to gather up forces to go against Calvin - they have a new threat to their numbers. Kaci, the young tabby whom they rescued and took into their home is snatched by some huge birds. Thunderbirds to be exact. After managing to save her from what they thought was going to be a certain death, they retreat into their home like captives. There were several lives that were lost to those birds and really now what were they going to do. The Pride managed to capture a Thunderbird, Kai and he advised them that they were avenging the death of one of their own. But there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye. All fingers point to Calvin but they need the proof before moving forward. While this book contained plenty of action, there was a lack of romance. But to make up for that, was the amount of sexual tension and well, moody tension going on in Faythe's little love triangle. After saving her own life and stepping up to the plate as a 'someday' Alpha - Faythe's little secret comes out into the open, but the reader is left hanging at the end, wondering what she is going to do? So are we prepared to read Alpha when it is released in Oct. ? Well, I know I am. As for the rest of her Pride, they have to prepare for the next war to come. I can't wait for Alpha. This is one series that everyone will fall in love with - it has a strong, stubborn heroine and plenty of heat and claws around for everyone! I expect nothing less from Ms. Vincent! So hopefully, even with some of the spoilers here - I haven't ruined the story for anyone! Enjoy!

This series couldn't get any better (unless Faythe ends up with Jace, that is!) The first few books in the Werecats series were good but shaky. The last three or so have been UNSTOPPABLE. The world of these werecats is an amazing, evolved, detailed and emotional place. As "Shift" opens, the family is gathered together and reeling from the death of Fayth's brother. Calvin Malone is set to fight Faythe's pack for the the powerful leader of the council position. As he has proved before, he is not afraid to kill for this power and will stop at nothing to get it. Few people outside of Faythe's father's pride actually believe Calvin has killed and plotted to take control but they need to convince the others to choose their side and fight with them because this war is immenent. Even more deaths come to pass when Thunderbirds, (rare, shape-shifting birds) stalk the Pride's home and occupants, including some members of thier allies Prides. The Thunderbirds quickly establish that they are after vengence because someone from the Pride killed on of theirs. This ends up being due to some more conniving from Calvin Malone and when one of their tabbies is kidnapped it is up to Faythe, Marc and Jace to get her back, along with the evidence to call off the Thunderbirds. The love triangle here is truly wrenching, and while I don't mind Marc, I have always adored Jace. I think he would be a better match for Faythe and with only one book left to close the series, it won't take too long to find out whom Faythe chooses. The story never wavers from being thrilling and I have to give the author kudos for this. The pacing, the intensity, the emotional is all on target. The Thunderbirds are intriguing in their own right and I loved all the interaction with them, especially in their own aviary. (I wouldn't mind seeing this world further explored!) Faythe has grown from an annoying, whiny child to a strong, caring, woman who can do the right things for the right reasons. While I absolutely can't wait until "Alpha", I do dread losing a series that is this amazing.

The werecats are mobilising to attack Malone, who is equally mobilising back - it turns out with far more planning and efficiency than the Sanders clan has expected or allowed for.But that isn't the central part of this book. There are two main elements - one is that Malone (by accident) manages to get the thunderbirds (sort of were-thunderbirds really) to attack Faythe's family and she has to try and derail that. There are a fair few nice bits in there, particularly as they're trying to work out the psychology of the thunderbirds who are nicely alien. The other part of it is the change in Jace because of the one night with Faythe and how that works out with Marc. You'll have to read the whole lot to find out for yourself. Not quite added as an afterthought is the stuff about Malone - enough to make it move forward into book 6, which will be the end of the series. Given it's called Alpha, we can assume Faythe becomes boss but the other changes will be interesting to see.
