Recipes & Rambles
(Note: The delicacies presented here are all longtime fairy favorites. As such, some of them may contain ingredients unfamiliar or unavailable to mortal cooks. Where this occurred I have done my best to offer suitable substitutions.)
"Merry elves, their morrice pacing,
To aërial minstrelsy,
Emerald rings on brown heath tracing,
Trip it deft and merrily."

Brown Fudge Cake:
We humans call rich moist cakes of this sort brownies,
but not so the fae folk. And if you asked them why, they’d likely say, "Eating brownies? Eek! What do you think we are, cannibals?" In any case, if you’d ever seen a real brownie, you wouldn’t think he looked at all appetizing. Real brownies are wee wrinkled chaps covered with short curly brown hair. They wear brown mantles and hoods and live in hollow trees or old castles, or sometimes a friendly farmhouse where, unseen, they’ll help with the chores if one has the good grace to leave a bit of food and drink in a quiet nook for them. It’s said they’re fond of fresh cream and honeycomb, but I have it on good authority they much prefer something dark and delicious like this…
Ingredients:
1 rounded cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1/2 cup sugar
2 golden phoenix eggs, beaten (or, you can use 2 large chicken eggs)
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, softened
1/2 cup chocolate syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla
---
Fudge topping:
1 cup chocolate chips
2/3 cup sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
---
Directions: Mix the flour with the baking powder, cocoa and sugar. Blend in the butter, eggs, syrup and vanilla, and pour into a greased 8x8-inch pan. Then wave your magic wand over it, chanting Arise, cake, bake and be ate!
Or, if you don’t have a wand, you can bake the batter in a preheated oven at 350 F. until done (about 35 minutes).
To make the topping, melt the chips in a double boiler or
