Chapter 1
Ella Milner liked riding home in the late afternoon, when the sun illuminated every hill, rock and plant in sight. Though she liked to complain about the dry plot of land she called home, she was often reminded how beautiful Canyon Hills really was. It wasn’t like she had much to compare it to; Ella was born and raised in Canyon Hills and had only left town on a handful of occasions. She wondered what life was like in other cities, especially on the east coast. But despite these frequent daydreams, she knew this was home and she had no real desire to live elsewhere. She was pleased to see her family’s farm over the hill as Lilly, her horse, was growing tired in the unforgiving heat. When she reached the farm, Ella tied Lilly up and headed inside.
You look like you had a fine day,
said Jane, Ella’s mother.
It was. I had a lovely ride home,
Ella replied. After dinner I think I’ll go outside and do some reading. Can I help you with any of the cooking?
I’m just about finished here, but I think your brother wanted a word with you. You know where to find him.
