    Chapter One: Introduction

    Master Harold…and the Boys by Athol Fugard was first launched in early 1962. The play first premiered at the Yale Repertory Theatre.

    In the month of May, in the same year, the play premiered on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre. The play was highly successful and it ran for 344 performances. Both the audiences and critics acclaimed this contemporary work of art.

    The story of the play is set in South Africa. The action takes place during apartheid era in South Africa.

    The play presents the effect of institutionalized racism and hatred on the people who have to live during that period.

    When the play was first produced, it was immediately banned by the government in South Africa; however, it ran successfully in several other countries. Later on, the ban was lifted and it proved to be a highly successful play in the country of production.

    The play is based on the events from the real world. It is assumed that the events in the play come from Fugard’s own experiences.

    Master Harold very effectively evokes the painful memories form the troubled history of South Africa.

    The play very successfully presents the racism and patriarchy that was widespread in the country. The playwright seems to be working towards exorcising his own personal demons through this play.

    During Athol Fugard’s childhood, his mother was a working woman. She managed the Jubilee Residential House and the St. George Tea Room in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

    The playwright’s father was physically not able to work. Secondly, he was an alcoholic. He would constantly shuttle between hospitals and home. It is said that Fugard’s father had extreme racist opinions.

    As a young man, Athol Fugard was known as ‘Hally.’ There were several black servants in their family, but Hally was very close to Sam and Willie, two his family’s older black servants.
