About the Author
Chapter One
Why on Earth Would You Want to Do That?
Over the years we have had a lot of people look at us like we were an egg short of a dozen to actually want to camp out in the wilderness in a tent. No modern conveniences? No BATHROOM! What about wild animals? Why would you want to do this? I suppose originally it was an economical decision. We simply couldn’t afford a travel trailer or motor home or even a tent trailer. We were not willing to give up enjoying the outdoors we loved, so tent camping here we come. Thirty-five years later we still have our tent but have discussed stepping up to a tent trailer. We shall see.
We don’t know why you have purchased this book, but we’re very glad you did. We have to assume that you too enjoy the affinity with nature you get when you camp outside in a tent. Or perhaps, like us it is an economical decision or perhaps a bit of both. What we do know is you must enjoy the great outdoors as much as we do and we wrote this book for you.
Whether you have been camping for years or just getting started we hope you find the knowledge we share helpful in making your tent camping experience the ultimate outdoor adventure. Some of the information is basic and common sense but we didn’t want to assume our readers were well versed in camping. We hope this encourages the novices among us to give this pure form of recreation a try.
There is absolutely nothing like waking up in the morning in the mountains. You may finish that sentence differently. For you it may be the desert or the beach or the lake; but wherever you find that inner peace you get only from Mother Nature, you will be able to apply what this book offers in the way of tips and helpful advice.
Much of what we share is based on mountain wilderness tent camping in Northern and Central Idaho and Northeast Washington State for the past thirty-five years. The ultimate tent camp may not be your objective for every outing. We still throw the little dome tent in, leave the kitchen at home and eat sandwiches and hot dogs for a week end trip. It is not practical to always have all the conveniences of home. We hope this book shows how with some planning and ingenuity you can enjoy all the comforts of home when you want to; in a tent.
The primary reason we love to tent camp is that we enjoy getting away from as many people as possible. What you find when you ditch the conveniences and are willing to leave the curling iron at home with the cell phone is a shift in your perspective of what is important. We have found the people we come across in the wilderness campgrounds are of like mind (mostly) and have opted to not leave the gated community at home to camp in the wilderness suburb in their thirty foot home away from home.
We recognize this is not for everyone and that’s ok. But if you love waking up in Mother Nature’s arm’s and falling asleep in her lap with nothing between
