My passion for writing was born from a tender age when I was in primary school. During those formative years I preferred plays, drama, poetry and pros. I used to write short plays which were acted on both in school and church. It was during high school and college years that my writing went a notch higher whereby I produced many literary works both for in-house local media publications. I developed passion for youth when I became a church youth leader, peer educator and counselor. I was also a school librarian for two and half years, an experience that propelled me to have an interest in young people. I am a graduate of information studies I have training in leadership, research, peer education and counseling. I have worked as youth leader, peer counselor, researcher, and a medical librarian among others. Working in these areas has given me an impetus to develop a guide on teen drug and substance abuse. I hope this guide will go along way in helping our young people get off this deadly behavior and practice with a potential to destroy productive generations and the world at large. This book is for everyone who cares enough for our young people and the society. Robert Mageto Nyakundi

INTRODUCTION
Drug and substance abuse does not only pose significant health and developmental risks to an individual, but also to the whole society. Despite all the said risks, teenage drug and substance abuse is an issue that has not been given much attention or prominence by many. This is unlike other social aspects and practices that threaten not only human existence, but also stability. This issue should be given more attention because young people at their formative stage are extremely active, versatile and adventurous. If youths in their teens are not kept properly, disasters of great magnitude are bound to occur that would get out of control.Even as many think that another kind of disaster like a nuclear bomb, a natural catastrophe like earthquake or war may wipe out the human race, it could be the youth who are not carefully tended. Many have failed to recognize the enemy within in the form of drug and substances which are readily available for the youth to indulge in. Teenage drug abuse causes them not only to get into domestic crime, but also other crimes of international magnitude including drug trafficking and terrorism among others. Many young people are dropping out of school or college in their droves and are joining gangs who cause large-scale destruction through their actions which are largely influenced and motivated by drug and substance abuse. Some states or countries are devoting huge amounts of money for drug abuse-related prevention, treatment and rehabilitations. However, still many more societies are not giving such a matter the attention it deserves and this has left a huge gap or lacuna that has been exploited by the young generation in getting into drug use in large scale. There is a moving story about a young man who got hooked up in drugs and this testifies on the detrimental effects of the same. A 19 year old man confessed that he had tried on every drug that can be imagined of. The question is, when did
