When You Get There, Write

About this ebook
So who is Ryan Lessard? For a long time he was the 'produce guy,' as this is the only contact I'd ever had with him, seeing him stock produce at a local supermarket at which we both worked. We never discussed the ripeness of lettuce, or what season was best for growing tomatoes and, whereas, I'm sure neither of us lost much sleep over that fact, what is unfortunate is that it took almost 10 years before I knew that he was much more than just the 'produce guy.'
Ryan is not just a poet, or a writer for that matter; he's what I call a reactive visionary. He's not a prophet; he simply sees. And then he writes. His poetry comes from all elements of life, things that he embraces and expresses to the fullest. His words are honest and powerful without being overtly obvious, or strung out with clichés and typicality; his mind is a maze, one you will want to get lost in-and lose yourself in-time and time again. There isn't enough poetry like this in the world. It's gut wrenching, but not vomit-inducing like a lot of so-called modern poetry. It'll trap you, yet it's irresistibly inviting. His words are many things; forgettable is not one of them.""-

When You Get There, Write - Ryan Lessard
Behind the Title
My Grandfather, Richard Vacca was a great man, but also a funny guy. When my brother sister & I were younger he was always using funny voices to make us laugh or when Grammie told him to stop doing something, like a little kid getting scolded. One thing I will never forget is the times he used to throw some Italian in with his stories. Grammie used to tell us it was mostly Italian jibberish. That made me think he was disguising swear words with Italian ones.
The thing he said every time we left his house or every time he left ours was 'cuando si arriva, scrivere'. This means 'when you arrive, write.' After he passed I remember talking to his Brother Lou about that little Italian quote I remember him saying. Brother Lou laughed because he too remembers his brother and his great sense of humor and laugh. I thought this might be a good story to start my new book, ‘When You Get There, Write.’ Since I have to title all these books I keep putting in front of your eyes I figured what better title.
I changed it a bit to fit because I guess I am the one who took him literally. I don’t know if I will get there, but I am betting on the fact that when I do get there I will write.

Nothing Concluded #53
5-9-1997
pushing far
and away
from the spot
where I once stood
couldn’t quite understand
don’t know much
more now
somehow still feeling
the forward thrust
of progression
allowing many
moments to pass
before reacting to situations
placed at my feet
without anger
all that would turn
up the heat
and activate the anger
working simultaneously
in the opposite direction
he must know
how much he will be
missed on his
search for truth
the journey
my guru
my brother
departing
once again
nothing concluded…
Wooden Fish Out of Water
4-15-2002
sitting beside wooden fish
out of water in the desert
my feet burn the walk too long
they all say be patient
the rain will arrive
feel like Noah waiting for the flood
days pass and the sky will tease
as if I were a cat can’t catch the string
someone is pulling quickly
along the floor successfully executed
nearly everyone every night
reorganize the music selection
every day I pour water into the earth…
