About this ebook

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a type of connective tissue disorder that worsens over time. Connective tissue connects, supports, or separates different types of tissues and organs. With dermatomyositis, problems with the connective tissue cause muscles and skin to degenerate. Other areas of the body may be affected, such as the lungs, heart, joints and esophagus.
This book is intended for the newly diagnosed dermatomyositis patient and their caregivers. Chapter two outlines the many symptoms that accompany dermatomyositis including skin rash, muscle aches and internal organ dysfunction. The third chapter introduces the causes of the condition; although the exact cause of dermatomyositis isn’t know, what is known is that it is an autoimmune disease, possibly genetic in origin. Diagnostic tests are discussed in detail in Chapter 4. The next chapter covers treatment options available; there isn’t a “cure,” but many treatments are available to treat the symptoms of the disease, from steroids to surgery. You’ll also find information about clinical trials and organizations to contact for support and further information about this often debilitating disease. We hope you find this book useful in your journey with dermatomyositis.

    Introduction

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a type of connective tissue disorder that worsens over time. Connective tissue connects, supports, or separates different types of tissues and organs. With dermatomyositis, problems with the connective tissue cause muscles and skin to degenerate. Other areas of the body may be affected, such as the lungs, heart, joints and esophagus.

DM is subdivided into three major areas:

    • Adult Dermatomyositis affects adults over the age of 18.

    • Dermatomyositis sine myositis (also called amyopathic DM) is subclass of DM that has skin, but not muscle, involvement.

    • Juvenile (Childhood) Dermatomyositis (JDMS) is the pediatric counterpart of adult dermatomyositis.

The exact cause for the condition isn’t known. Current research indicates that it is most likely an autoimmune disorder. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the body's immune system attacks and destroys healthy body tissue by mistake. There are over 80 autoimmune disorders, including dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis may affect anyone from birth to
