About this ebook
What Desires Drive You?
Every day bombards us with so many desires, and we wish we could pursue them all. Ecclesiastes recounts the story of one person who decided to try. He denied himself nothing that he wanted: Money. Sex. Power. Prestige. Knowledge. Experiences. He pursued them all. But what happens when we reach the end of those things? If you feel like you’re racing the clock for all you desire, this strangely named book may feel surprisingly familiar. See where his desires led him and what he learned through it all.

INTRODUCTION
THE BOOK OF ECCLESIASTES
The Quest for Meaning
Many Bible readers would agree that Ecclesiastes is one of the most puzzling books of the Bible.
¹ It is best to be frank from the outset: Ecclesiastes is a difficult book.
² Because of its challenges and uniqueness, studying Ecclesiastes is particularly interesting as well as challenging. Yet perhaps this book isn’t really so hard to understand as we’re sometimes conditioned to believe. Despite the attempts of biblical scholars and others to make the book seem problematical and inaccessible, it is an easy book to read and grasp.
³ Once we see what is broadly happening in the book, it is not too difficult to find our way about it.
⁴
For Reflection Today
The book of Ecclesiastes has been aptly called the most contemporary or modern book in the Bible.
⁵
Ecclesiastes was clearly written as a discussion guide for people prepared to think out their response to God’s unseen hand in life and history.
⁶ It is the thinking man’s book.
⁷ The book is God’s wise counsel for those who know His ways but have found them perplexing and troubling.
⁸
The theme of Ecclesiastes is the necessity of fearing God in a fallen and therefore frequently confusing and frustrating world.
⁹
The Quest
What we find in Ecclesiastes is a virtual summary of the biblical worldview: life lived by purely human and earthly standards is empty, while life with God at the center is fulfilling.
¹⁰
The author of Ecclesiastes "in effect tells the story of his quest to find satisfaction in life. This quest is reconstructed from the vantage point of someone whose quest ended satisfactorily. The transitions between units often keep the quest in view: ‘so I turned to consider,’ ‘again I saw,’ ‘then I saw,’ etc. As the quest unfolds, one is continuously aware of the discrepancy between the narrator’s present outlook and his futile search undertaken in the past. In effect, the speaker recalls the labyrinth of dead ends that he pursued, recreating his restless past with full vividness but not representing it as his mature
